Q: Can students simply drop by, or how would you prefer that they schedule time with you?
A: Students can drop by for many of our services during our walk-in hours, which run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. Those hours are extended until 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Q: Discuss the ways you can help students.
A: I can help students with a wide variety of tasks – planning for grad school; searching for a job, internship, or co-op; major/career exploration; etc.
Q: Why should students use Handshake? Do you have a Handshake power tip? What are students surprised to learn that they can do in Handshake?
A: Handshake is extremely useful because there are so many opportunities available for students – especially on the job board. We receive hundreds of job postings a day, so there is literally a job for everyone. Accounts are already created for all students. They just need to log in and update their profile and make sure that they keep it up-to-date.
Q: What's the best tip you have for those writing a resume or cover letter? How can you help students prepare both?
A: One of the most common mistakes that we see in Career Services is the use of a template when writing a resume or cover letter. We discourage the use of templates because they can be very difficult to edit and often promote a sense of uniformity, which makes it hard for a student to stand out.

Q: How can technology can make a search easier? How has it made searches more challenging? How do you overcome that?
A: Technology in the job search is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it is easier to network and find job postings, especially if a student is looking to work out of state. On the other hand, the relative ease of applying increases the level of competition for a job, and the number of postings available can be overwhelming if a student does not have targeted search parameters in place.
If a student is struggling to navigate Handshake or other job boards, they should come see me, and I can help them narrow down their search or set those parameters.
Q: What do you wish you had known when you were searching for your first job after college?
A: Don’t give up hope! It can be discouraging when you don’t hear back from an employer, especially after a promising job interview.
Q: Why should students attend the next career fair? What's your best advice for preparing? What's a good strategy the day of?
A: The Career Fair is an excellent opportunity for students to meet with employers and get a good sense of what opportunities are available for them. We have over 130 employers attending the fair!
My advice for students is to prepare as much in advance as possible – choose your outfit and have it prepared/cleaned, print multiple copies of your resume, and prepare your “elevator pitch” – a short summary that encapsulates the characteristics that make you stand out from other students/applicants.
On the day of the Career Fair, make sure that you give yourself plenty of time to comfortably navigate the fair and speak with employers. Have your strategy planned out so that you do not have to rush. If you feel flustered or harried, it will likely reflect in your appearance and body language.
