In keeping with a traditional mission of support for the fire protection and law enforcement professions, The Bluecoats Inc. of Summit County Scholarship was established in 1990 by Bluecoats Inc. Annual awards are presented to underwrite the tuition, fees, and costs of books for promising students in both the Criminal Justice and the Fire Protection Technology programs.
Recipients within The University of Akron’s Summit College (now the College of Applied Science and Technology) are not to be receiving any form of financial aid other than this award from The University of Akron. A scholarship committee established by each of the academic programs, in cooperation with the University’s financial aid program, reviews applications and selects recipients. First consideration is given to children of current full- or part-time (voluntary) members of the fire and police departments within Summit County or the Summit County Sheriff’s Department who meet the established criteria. The ideal candidate will have the personal qualities and depth of commitment characteristic of the exceptional safety officer. The awards will be distributed to students who have successfully completed the first year of the program with a minimum 2.50 GPA. In the event none of the candidates is a son or daughter of a member of the safety forces, the award will be presented to the person(s) best qualified.
