Marketing Student Chapter Wins in Two Categories at International Competition

The conference, sponsored by The Wall Street Journal, offered dozens of professional seminars for students to attend, a digital marketing boot camp and numerous competitions, including a marketplace simulation.

Our chapter was recognized for its work with Ellet High School students on a significant promotional project that was part of a collaboration with Akron Public Schools and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. In addition to the project, AMA student chapter members assisted members of DECA, a career and technical student organization, to mentor Ellet High School students on preparing to succeed in college and careers in marketing. The work with the high school is part of a 2018 agreement between UA and several local high schools to have UA serve as a Sister University to help increase college and career readiness among Akron Public School students. Sara Broadbent noted the importance of the support she and the group received throughout the year from faculty and staff, including Dr. Deborah Owens, interim department chair; and the group’s advisor, Jacob Farrar, director of the Taylor Institute of Direct Marketing.

“We certainly couldn’t have been as successful a chapter this year without the amazing support from the College of Business Administration Department of Marketing and the University, as well as the collaborations we had in the community,” said Broadbent. “It was rewarding for everyone to have worked on our projects, especially those we did with the local high school students.”

The AMA chapter is a cross section of UA, with members ranging from graphic design to computer science to business majors. Through membership, students are learning more about how to market themselves and a business, all while engaging in interactive workshops during the school year.
