When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of UA alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

The need for scholarships grows each year, however, as students continue to face an increased financial burden in pursuit of a college degree. In fact, 94 percent of today’s baccalaureate students borrow to pay for college – versus just 45 percent in 1993. Across the country, the average college-related debt for borrowers in the class of 2016 was $37,172; for Ohio students, that figure was $30,239.

Students who want to apply for scholarships should visit the scholarship page on the Financial Aid site.

The Department of Development does not accept applications for or distribute scholarships. Scholarships are distributed through the University’s Office of Student Financial Aid.

Steininger, Frank C. and Karen S. Excellence in Marketing Award

The Frank C. and Karen S. Steininger Excellence in Marketing Award was established in 2016 by generous benefactors Frank C. and Karen S. Steininger. Frank earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from The University of Akron in 1981, and Karen earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing from UA in 1982. Today, Frank serves as executive senior vice president, chief financial officer, and treasurer of Houston-based CIVEO, a global leader in workforce accommodations for employees of oil and gas companies. The couple, grateful for their education at The University of Akron, established the award to ensure that future promising students have an opportunity to receive an outstanding marketing education from UA and fulfill their career goals.

The Frank C. and Karen S. Steininger Excellence in Marketing Award is intended to attract, recruit, retain, and graduate an outstanding student who will complete all requirements to earn an undergraduate degree through the Department of Marketing at The University of Akron.

The student who is supported by The Frank C. and Karen S. Steininger Excellence in Marketing Award shall be referred to as the Steininger Student Fellow in all correspondence on matters related to the award. Ideally, the Steininger Student Fellow will be an incoming, full-time freshman who receives the award for a maximum of four years, i.e., the initial year and three renewals.

It is anticipated that the award account will be funded with $8,000 annually for the Steininger Student Fellow, who may use the award for any of the following:

  1. Tuition and fees
  2. Student housing
  3. Textbooks and supplies
  4. On-campus employment, provided the Steininger Student Fellow works with a faculty mentor in the Department of Marketing
  5. Other purposes that benefit the Steininger Student Fellow as determined by the chair of the Department of Marketing

To be eligible for The Frank C. and Karen S. Steininger Excellence in Marketing Award, a student must be enrolled full time at The University of Akron as a marketing major or be an incoming full-time freshman who plans to major in marketing. He/she must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, an excellent record of conduct, and evidence of engagement in extracurricular activities and/or student organizations (balanced by employment requirements). Factors considered in the selection of the Steininger Student Fellow include the student’s academic background, high school, interest in pursuing a degree in marketing, skills and career objectives, and financial need. Special consideration will be given to students from an underrepresented minority. The award is renewable up to three times as long as the Steininger Student Fellow maintains all requirements of the award.

Selection of the Steininger Student Fellow will be made by the Steininger Student Fellow Committee (comprised of the chair and two faculty members in the Department of Marketing), with input from the Steininger family. The Steininger Student Fellow Committee will review the progress of the Steininger Student Fellow each year to assess his/her academic progress before renewing the award.

The first Steininger Student Fellow will be selected prior to the fall 2016 semester. Thereafter, a new Steininger Student Fellow will be selected whenever the previous one graduates or is no longer eligible for the award.
