Skeeles Field

Born in Steubenville and raised in Richmond, Ohio, Bill Skeeles ’77, loved baseball at an early age, and began playing under the watchful eye of his father, also his coach. His baseball passion grew, leading him to The University of Akron, where he pursued a degree and was a member of the baseball program.

Recalling those days, Skeeles says they shaped his ability to work with a team and become a leader. Those life lessons provided a strong foundation for Bill and his wife, Mary, as they became successful entrepreneurs, founding PointeNorth Insurance Group in 1996.

Bill said the announced return of UA baseball, set for Spring 2020, excited him. The Skeeles’ desire to be a part of baseball’s return led them to fund Skeeles’ field.

“We knew there was going to be an effort to bring the baseball program back. Being a graduate of this university, we thought we could make an impact to help out. The field may be one of the best, if not the best in the conference. I think it’s comparable to the major league parks I’ve been in.” - Bill Skeeles

Benefits to campus

In May 2021 Akron Zips Baseball dedicated Skeeles Field in honor of Bill and Mary Skeeles and their generous support of UA Athletics.

Their $1 million gift funded the baseball field renovation and construction of the grandstands. Bill and Mary also provided additional funds to enhance the student-athlete experience for future members of UA Baseball.

Skeeles Field provides a sophisticated playing experience for our student athletes and a recruiting tool to attract student-athletes to UA. During the summer, local baseball leagues utilize Skeeles Fields for playoff games.
