Alumnus prefers to express ‘thanks,’ graciously declines fundraising prize
For Sumeet Muju, a 1996 University of Akron graduate who holds an M.S. in chemical engineering, the possibility of winning an iPad was never a factor in donating to the University’s Annual Giving program.
Alumnus Sumeet Muju won an iPad for participating in the University’s Annual Giving program but rather than accept the prize, he elected to express his appreciation for his education.
In fact, when Muju, a longtime UA supporter, was informed he’d won the iPad – which was being offered as an incentive to donate at least $50 – he politely refused.
“First, I already have an iPad,” explained Muju, “and I also knew the University was raising funds to support student scholarships and programs. It seemed counterproductive to accept the prize, which would have taken away from the fundraising total.”
Instead, the grateful alumnus, who works as an independent information technology consultant for Anyasoft Corp. in Herndon, Va., expressed his thanks: “The University of Akron provided me with a solid education and a great experience and gave me the skills and confidence I needed to go forward in my career,” said Muju, “and I experienced my first snow in Akron!”
A native of Kanpur, India, where he earned his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering, Muju also commented that The University of Akron has an outstanding reputation in his homeland and is particularly well known for its College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering.
The iPad decline was greatly appreciated and a first for Jeremy Butler, who directs the University’s Annual Giving program in which student-callers seek donations from alumni each semester. Butler now plans to donate the iPad to a deserving student.
