Athena Character Requirements
We are committed to ensuring that every actor feels comfortable and confident in what they are doing onstage, and that their personal boundaries are respected. To set yourself up for success, please review the character requirements below and ensure that you are comfortable with what is required of the roles you are auditioning for.
If you have questions about any of this, please talk to the director or make a comment on your audition form.
both Athena and Mary Wallace:
- These roles involve a great deal of lines that will need to be memorized fairly quickly. These characters also rarely leave the stage.
- This is a physically demanding show requiring considerable movement during scenes, including fencing and workout exercises. Although you do not need to already know how to do these movements (we will teach you!) you do need to be ready to learn and willing to build up the physical stamina to engage in movement and combat throughout the entire show.
- Use of fencing swords in carefully choreographed combat scenes
- Potential partner workout exercises involving physical contact with the other actor. (These will be created with respect to the individual boundaries of each actor.)
- Casual physical contact with each other (such as hands on shoulders, etc.)
- Discussion of birth control and sex
- Discussion about having sexual thoughts about their teachers
- Discussion of medical content such as taking Accutane and having a palate expander
- Depiction of the characters taking alcoholic shots
- Lines include “oh my god”
- Primal screams (we will guide you in this)
- Costumes will include athletic wear and fencing uniforms (including fencing masks that go over the head)
Additional Athena:
- Casual brief description of a sexual encounter on a train
- Mention of the character’s mother moving away
- Mention of financial problems at home
- Is present for a scene where Mary Wallace is vomiting
Additional Mary Wallace:
- Sobbing
- Depiction of vomiting
- Description of a non-graphic sexual fantasy she has about a teacher
Jamie:
- This is a small role that only appears at the end of the show
- A scene with fencing
- Use of fencing swords in carefully choreographed combat scenes
- Costume will include a fencing uniform (including a fencing mask that goes over the head)
