At a White House ceremony on November 19, University of Akron College of Education alumnus G. Kwame Scruggs ’91 ’92, founder and executive director of the Northeast Ohio based non-profit organization, Alchemy Inc., was honored by First Lady Michelle Obama with the National Arts & Humanities Youth Program Award. Alchemy was chosen from a pool of more than 350 nominations and 50 finalists and was 1 of 12 other programs to receive an award.
Scruggs earned his B.S. and M.S. Degrees in Technical Education with an emphasis in guidance and counseling.
Alchemy runs in- and after-school classes and workshops at seven public schools in Akron, Cleveland, and Youngstown for urban adolescent boys between the ages of 12 and 19. The classes meet weekly for up to 22 weeks. The program uses mentors, storytelling, mythology and African drumming to help those youth function successfully as members of family, school and community.
