About the Department
The Department of Biomedical engineering began as a research institute at UA in 1980 and became an academic department offering graduate degrees in 1984. In 1998, we expanded our student focus by offering an ABET-accredited undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering.
The mission of the Biomedical Engineering Department is to provide quality education and applied learning at the interface of engineering and medicine, improve education outcomes through interdisciplinary scientific discovery, and engage the community through partnerships and outreach. The faculty have strong, funded research programs that engage students at every level, from K-12 students to doctoral students and engage industry and clinicians to translate innovative medical solutions.
