Scholarship Opportunities

In addition to the University/College/Department Scholarships, the following scholarship opportunities are available to the underrepresented minority engineering students.

From the College of Engineering

Minority Engineering Scholarship

Established by the College of Engineering in 1990, this contract-based scholarship is offered to the domestic students from historically under-represented groups (namely African-American, Hispanic and American-Indian)in the IDEAs Program. If a student fulfills the contractual requirements, he or she can earn a scholarship up to $3,500 per academic year.

The Art and Carol Anton Scholarship

Established by Mr. Art Anton and Mrs. Carol Anton for the purpose of attracting highly-qualified incoming freshmen from ethnically underrepresented groups to The University of Akron to study engineering.  A student awarded with an Anton Scholarship will be provided with approximately $6,000 during their first two years at The University of Akron.  At least five scholarships will be awarded annually.

The Philip S. Thompson Scholarship for Diversity in Engineering and Business Scholarship

Established by Mr. Philip Thompson to support the social need for greater diversity in engineering and business leadership. Preference is to award this scholarship to a high-achieving, under-represented engineering student, priority to a black American. The scholarship funds are to be applied to tuition and fees only.

Arroyo, Steve and Millie Scholarship

Established in 1984 by Mr. And Mrs. Robert F. Meyerson and an anonymous donor in memory of Steve and Millie Arroyo, members of the Akron community. The fund recognizes a minority student in the College of Engineering who exemplifies outstanding merit and financial need.

Goodyear Mentoring Future Technology Leaders Scholarship for Engineering

In conjunction with the College of Engineering, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. created this award to provide scholarship assistance for incoming freshmen who have chosen to study engineering. Through a competition held by Goodyear called "Engineering Career Day," a select team from Goodyear and the College of Engineering will review all candidates and award one or more two-year scholarships.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and The University of Akron Engineering scholarship will only be offered to incoming freshmen to attend The University of Akron and major in one of the engineering disciplines offered in the College of Engineering. If the student changes his or her coursework to reflect a major that is not offered through the College of Engineering, the scholarship will be revoked. Scholarships will be awarded based on annual criteria established by Goodyear and the College. Special consideration will be given to underrepresented populations in the field of engineering.

GPD Civil Engineering Scholarship Program

The scholarship provides a $4,500 award per year for tuition and (optional) paid employment the summer before and/or the intervening summer. The scholarship will be awarded yearly and the focus of the program is on students who are pursuing a program of study in Civil Engineering at The University of Akron. Candidates must be a US citizen or permanent resident/national, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, excel in mathematics and Science at the High School and University level and have declared their major as Civil Engineering. Preference will be given to minority candidates.

The Lubrizol Scholarship, Fellowship and Award Program

Approved annually, the scholarship is to be credited to the account of a deserving junior or senior studying Chemistry Engineering or Mechanical Engineering and apply only to tuition. Selection is to be made solely by the college or university in accordance with its customary procedure and is to be based primarily on established academic achievement and/or academic potential or the financial need of exceptional students.

In the 2011-2012 academic year, two chemical engineering scholarships are to be awarded to a diverse student (gender/race) at $2,000 each and two mechanical engineering scholarships are to be awarded to a diverse student (gender/race) at $2,000 each.

The Paul C. K. Lam NASA/Ohio Space Grant Consortium Scholarship

Established in 2009 by The NASA/Ohio Space Grant Consortium to honor the memory of Dr. Paul C. K. Lam, who served as the Ohio Space Grant Consortium Director from 2007-09. The scholarship will be awarded to a promising underrepresented undergraduate student majoring in Mechanical Engineering at The University of Akron, under the discretion of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the IDEAs Program.

The Wells Family Foundation Scholarship for Engineering

Established in 2006 by Denise and Norm Wells on behalf of the Wells Family Foundation for their noted belief in the value of education, and their desire to invest in the engineering future of this community by offering scholarships to undergraduate engineering students that reside within the northeast region of Ohio. The scholarship provides for four annual undergraduate scholarships for the amount of $2,500 each to support tuition and fee expenses.
