Our engineering academic advisors are the unspoken heroes of our College.
Part life coach part information guru, our engineering academic advisors are committed to helping students like you develop and achieve realistic academic and career goals based on interests and abilities. Engineering academic advisors will support you through your college experience by helping you:
- Explore and understand engineering program options and requirements
- Select courses appropriate for your major
- Understand academic policies and requirements
- Be candid in answering your questions and concerns
Find your advisor
Every engineering student at The University of Akron is assigned at least one advisor. Some students are assigned faculty advisors and some are assigned staff advisors.
Your advisor is listed in the Student Center in My Akron and can be found in the “Advisor” box on the right side of the screen. Click “Details” to get contact information on your advisor.
Your faculty advisor should be listed first. If you do not have a faculty advisor listed, contact your department.
You can see your faculty advisor at any time. If you are a first-year student, contact Diane Burrowbridge, Coordinator of Academic Advising Dept/Program, at 330-972-9368. For upperclassmen, if you cannot reach your faculty advisor, contact the second advisor listed (typically your Department Chair or Associate Department Chair).
Make an appointment
Only undergraduate students currently enrolled at The University of Akron can attend drop-ins or schedule appointments with our advisors. We are currently unable to provide appointments for prospective students. Email your advisor directly to schedule an appointment.
Most first-year engineering students will have a mandatory advising meeting prior to registration for the next semester. If you do not complete this requirement, a hold will be placed on your account preventing you from registering for the upcoming semester.
If you have questions, schedule a meeting with your advisor each semester prior to registering for classes to ensure you are staying on track. You can always schedule an appointment or utilize our drop-in schedule. Remember, their sole purpose to to support your success. Reach out to them!
Advising is a two-way street. Students must fulfill their end of the bargain in order to gain the most out of their engineering advising experience. You must:
- Accept responsibility for your educational experience
- Maintain contact with your academic advisor throughout the semester and come prepared to all advising appointments
- Learn how to use online resources like the DPR and My Akron
- Clarify your educational, career and personal goals
