Scholarships

Barbara N. Armstrong Scholarship

Graduate assistants in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences established this scholarship in 1981 in honor of Barbara N. Armstrong, Ph.D., professor of Family and Consumer Sciences and former head of the school. An outstanding teacher, deeply committed to the pursuit of knowledge, Dr. Armstrong is the rare teacher who can make learning fun and who gives her students gifts which will last a lifetime. The scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student (graduate preferred) seeking a degree in family development. Recipients of the award are determined by a committee in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences and the director of Student Financial Aid and Employment.

Claudia J. Bowers Scholarship in Family Studies

The Claudia J. Bowers Scholarship has been created to assist a deserving student in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences who is pursuing a degree in Family Studies. The recipient will be selected annually by the director of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences based on academic standing, need for financial assistance, and volunteer involvement in community life. The scholarship is renewable annually.

Leona W. Farris Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the faculty of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences in 1987 in recognition of Leona W. Farris, Director of Community Involvement, who taught in the School for 20 years. The earnings from its endowed fund are to be used to encourage black university students majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences. A faculty committee will determine the recipient or recipients from black students with a high grade point average, a commitment to community service and financial need.

The Dr. Virginia L. Gunn Scholarship is Family and Consumer Sciences

The Dr. Virginia L. Gunn Scholarship in Family and Consumer Sciences was created in 1997 through a gift from Marilyn E. Lemmon, Class of 1997, in honor of Dr. Virginia L. Gunn, Professor of Home Economics and Family Ecology at The University of Akron, who provided mentoring and encouragement. The earnings from this endowed fund will be used to provide financial assistance, with preference given to a non-traditional student in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences. The recipient will be selected by the faculty of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences in coordination with the Office of Financial Aid.

Fred A. Kronseder and Helen W. Kronseder Scholarship

Dr. Helen K. Cleminshaw established The Fred A. Kronseder and Helen W. Kronseder Scholarship in 1987 to encourage students in the joy of learning. The scholarship was given in honor of her parents who first taught her the joy of learning. The earnings from its endowed fund are used to provide scholarship assistance for deserving graduate or undergraduate students majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences. Recipients will be determined by a faculty committee with a preference for students with a high grade-point average and an interest in child development and/or family development.

Mae C. O’Neil Scholarship

This endowed fund, established in 1987 with provisions from the estate of Mae C. O’Neil, esteemed faculty member, provides scholarship assistance for graduate or undergraduate students majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences. Recipients will be determined by a faculty committee with a preference for a high grade point average and financial need.l need.

Clarissa D. Rainey, M.D. and Clarence W. Rainey, M.D. Scholarship

The Clarissa D. Rainey, M.D. and Clarence W. Rainey, M.D. Scholarship was established in 1987 by Dr. Mary C. Rainey in honor of her parents. Dr. Rainey initiated this fund to reflect her parents’ strong belief in the value of higher education and in family life. The earnings from this endowed fund are used to provide scholarship assistance for deserving graduate or undergraduate students majoring in Family and Consumer Sciences. Recipients will be determined by a faculty committee with a preference for students with a high grade point average and a strong history of community work.

Family and Consumer Sciences Education Scholarship

Dr. V. Joanne Fleming established this scholarship to provide financial assistance for a junior or senior in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences who plans a career as an educator. The recipient must have a strong academic record and financial need. Dr. Fleming served as director of the School from 1990 to June 2000.

Bernard Dean Scholarship in Family and Child Development

The Bernard Dean Scholarship in Family and Child Development was created in 2002 by Susan D. and David D. Witt to honor their fathers, Bernard Prebynski and Dean Witt. This scholarship will provide financial assistance to a Family Development or Child Development major in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences. The recipient must have demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity, and will be asked to submit a short essay with the scholarship application describing how they meet this criterion, and explaining how the award will assist them in achieving their professional goals. The recipient will be selected by the Student Relations Committee of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences in coordination with Drs. Susan D. Witt and David D. Witt

The Akron-Canton Chapter and The Cleveland Chapter of the Construction Specification Institute (CSI)

The Akron–Canton Chapter and The Cleveland Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) offers two one-year scholarships each for college students who are enrolled in an accredited university serving the construction and interior design industries in northeast Ohio, and who desire to pursue a career in the construction and interior design industries. Scholarships are for the academic year starting in fall.

Home Builders Association Serving Portage and Summit Counties

The HBA serving Ohio Portage and Summit Counties offers scholarships for the next academic year. That information will be posted when available.

Family and Consumer Science Scholarship for residents of Lorain County, Ohio

The Lorain County Home Economics Association offers a scholarship to a Lorain County undergraduate college student majoring in any area of Family and Consumer Science. For current information and an application contact:
