Frank Laury: Future business leader

Frank Laury will be the student speaker at the Summer Commencement ceremony on Saturday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m. He is graduating with a B.B.A. in Sales Management.

Hometown: Norton

Graduate: Saint Vincent-Saint Mary High School in Akron

What’s next? I am moving to Raleigh, N.C., to pursue a career with TEK Systems as a sales representative.

Q: Best advice you ever got from a professor?

A: He said, “Keep going and never stop pursuing my end goals because your competition is waking up early, working hard to beat you and is chasing the same goals you are. He went on to say, "Someone has to be the top, so why not you? Stay hungry and just remember nothing gets done until something is sold."

Q: What’s your advice to incoming freshmen?

A: Take a step back, look at where you are and think about what you want to become. Don't lose sight of that and instead attack that goal of what you want to become because your first year, it is easy to get off track. Make sure you absolutely have fun throughout these years because they will change your life forever for the positive or negative; it all depends on you. Lastly, step out of your comfort zone. Don't be afraid, or shy, or think you’re too cool to attend an on-campus event or become a leader for an organization — I promise you will look back and wish you would have done something different. Have fun, learn something new every day and be proud to call yourself a ZIP!

Q: What’s your ultimate career goal?

A: To be an executive in a company, whether that is a vice president of sales or a national account manager. I want to be able to leave my mark and create a legacy for myself within the company. I hope to be able to make a positive impact on my colleagues’ lives so that they can take something away from the time I was in a leadership position. When they become leaders, I hope they pass along what they learned from me as well as their own experiences.
