Dr. Robert A. Weiss, Hezzleton E. Simmons Professor of Engineering at The University of Akron, will become UA’s first Fellow of the American Chemical Society. Weiss is one of 192 distinguished scientists who will be inducted into the 2010 class of ACS Fellows on Aug. 23 during the society’s national meeting in Boston. Honorees are recognized for their contributions to science, the profession and society. The ACS Fellow program began in 2009 when 163 Fellows were announced.

Weiss joined the UA College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering last year after serving as the United Technologies Corp. Professor of Advanced Materials and Processing and professor of chemical engineering at the University of Connecticut. Weiss also was a Board of Trustees Professor at UConn (the highest honor bestowed on faculty), associate director of the Institute of Materials Science for six years and director of the university’s polymer program for nine years.
Honor is well deserved
“Dr. Weiss is a tremendous credit to the college and to the polymer field where his expertise is highly regarded,” says Dr. Stephen Z.D. Cheng, dean of the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering. “His recognition as an ACS Fellow is well earned and well deserved.”
Weiss is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the Polymer Materials Science and Engineering Division of the ACS, the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE), and the North American Thermal Analysis Society. He received the 2008 International Award from SPE and was a Fulbright Scholar. He has 19 patents and has edited two monographs and published 192 reviewed journal articles and book chapters. He is editor-in-chief of the journals Polymer Engineering and Science and Polymer Composites.
