Forty-three UA students made the most of the Martin Luther King Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 21, by volunteering their time with the Department of Student Life’s Civic Engagement Programs to work with a local nonprofit agency, Nazareth Housing Development Corporation. This is the second year that UA has hosted an MLK Day of Service.
Nazareth facilitates housing for low and moderate-income families in Summit County. The UA students completed a variety of projects, including landscaping, cleaning, wallpaper removal and interior painting. Their efforts were supported, in part, through a grant from ServeOhio.
"I enjoyed seeing the difference we made as a group and how fast things get done when we all focus," said Kleo Kruger, an exercise science-prephysical therapy major.
Leroy Herrin agreed.
"I loved working with the diverse group we had and I was proud to celebrate MLK's legacy," said Herrin, who is earning a graduate degree in education.
Nazareth relies on volunteers to be successful in its mission.
"I would like to thank the University and the volunteers for helping Nazareth to "make a house a home" at the MLK Day of Service," said Keith Harris, project development specialist. "It's because of the generosity of volunteers that Nazareth can provide safe and affordable housing to families in Summit County. The work done by volunteers greatly lowers the cost of rehabbing our homes."
