The University of Akron, which offers the nation's only bachelor's degree program in corrosion engineering, took the lead this week in an international effort to prevent and control costly corrosion. UA's National Center for Education and Research on Corrosion and Materials Performance (NCERCAMP) announced plans to form two collaborative multinational groups to accelerate testing methods, establish research activities and agree upon common specifications and standards for materials performance.

Partners seek solutions
At the show, UA's NCERCAMP joined other participating Ohio institutions and businesses, including the Ohio Aerospace and Aviation Council, JobsOhio and Tesla NanoCoatings Inc. (Tesla is one of NCERCAMP’s successful private partners in developing solutions to corrosion in military equipment). The international meeting provided new opportunities to identify other prospective private partners in technology research and student co-op opportunities.
Housed at the University, the NCERCAMP has built a set of programs and services to support new product development and provide awareness of the need for enhanced approaches to addressing corrosion and materials performance. The costs to American taxpayers of corrosion to the country's physical infrastructure are staggering — estimated at $400 billion annually.
The air show is held at the Le Bourget Exhibition Centre and attracts more than 2,000 exhibitors from 45 countries. The event, which runs through June 23, brings together all of the aerospace industry's players from across the globe to showcase the latest technological innovations.
