Mary Ann Meador, a University of Akron adjunct professor in the Department of Polymer Engineering, was honored as a 2013 Fellow of the American Chemistry Society (ACS). The ACS Fellows Program acknowledges members for achievements and contributions in science and the profession.

As a chemical engineer for NASA Glenn Research Center, Meador conducts polymer research for applications such as aircraft engines, batteries and fuel cells. Recently, Meador and her colleagues have been working on the development of polymer-silica aerogels and polymer aerogels used for lightweight aircraft antennas and insulation for inflatable decelerators for specialty vehicles.
Specifically at UA, Meador and Miko Cakmak, distinguished professor of polymer engineering and director of UA's Center for Multifunctional Polymer Nanomaterials and Devices, are collaborating to fabricate film aerogels for insulation for inflatable decelerators. Conversely, Meador also is working with Sadhan C. Jana, professor of polymer engineering, and graduate student, Andrew Shinko, on aerogel development.
"I am honored to be recognized as an ACS Fellow and also to be associated with the Department of Polymer Engineering at The University of Akron," Meador says.
