Ice and vegetable carvers from The University of Akron's Garde Manger Club will sculpt frozen and culinary art for display and competition at Ice Fest 2013 on Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in and outside of the Student Union. The free event will highlight a Zips soccer theme.

Outside the Student Union, ice sculptors will craft a sparkling menagerie of frosty creatures. They'll race to smooth the shoulders and shine the wings of their sleek sculptures in the speed-carving competition, scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
Following the speed-carving competition, new head coach Jared Embick and players from the star-studded Zips men’s soccer team will stop by the festival to greet guests.
A favorite fixture at the annual event, a 2,000-pound ice throne, will beckon guests to take a seat and a photo opportunity. Aaron Costic, UA alumnus and gold medal champion at the 2006 Olympic Arts Festival, returns to carve this year's throne in the likeness of Zippy.
The event concludes with an announcement of the winning sculptors.
