Furry, Thelma C., Papers

Thelma C. Furry (1910-2000) was an Akron, Ohio attorney, graduate of The University of Akron School of Law, member of the Communist Party, and the first female trial lawyer in Akron.  Specializing in domestic and juvenile cases, she was known for taking controversial and unpopular stands and was the defender of those who had no voice in their own defense locally and nationally including people who suffered civil rights violations such as homosexuals and AIDS patients. Her papers include legal documents, correspondence, a scrapbook, publications, and taped interviews regarding her defense of civil rights cases.

Friends of Music Records

The Friends of Music, founded in Akron, Ohio in 1921, seeks to enrich and encourage young musicians and children by offering them an opportunity to perform in a non-competitive and friendly environment and offers membership to professional, semi-professional, and aspiring musicians and non-performing music lovers. The records include annual reports, constitutions and bylaws, correspondence, programs, and scrapbooks containing programs, newspaper clippings, photographs, and meeting minutes.

Foster, Robert J., Papers

Range: 1950s - 1980s Size: 2.0 Record Group:

Robert J. “Bob” Foster (1924-2009) of Randolph, Ohio served in the Navy during World War II and worked at Goodyear Aircraft Corporation and then Goodyear Aerospace for 39 years, from 1946 to 1985. He received three patents while working at Goodyear. His papers include correspondence, photographs, and blueprints relating to his life and work. 


Fortnightly Club of Akron Records

The Fortnightly Club of Akron was founded in 1896 as a women’s scholarly club. Meetings were twice a month from October to April and presentations given ranging from nations of the world, to Shakespeare, to literature and authors, to local history. Fort, W. Howard, Scrapbooks

W. Howard Fort (1915-2009) was a prominent Black attorney in Akron, Ohio who served on the boards of numerous local business and community organizations including The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Akron Area Chamber of Commerce, Urban League, and The University of Akron.  The W. Howard Fort Scrapbooks consist of 18 scrapbooks and one photograph album assembled by Fort that include newspaper clippings, photographs, documents, and ephemera that document his life and work.


Flower, Robert D., Collection

Robert D. “Bob” Flower is a long-time resident of Stow, Ohio and member and trustee of the Stow Historical Society. His collection includes aerial photographs of Akron, a scrapbook of the Akron Naval Reserve, a map of Summit County, hard copies of the Akron Beacon Journal, and memorabilia from Polsky’s Department Store and Akron Central Hower High School.


Flickinger, Maynard L., Papers

Maynard L. Flickinger (1900-1990) of Barberton, Ohio was an M.I.T. graduate and an airship engineer for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s s Aeronautics Department, the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation, and the Goodyear Aircraft Corporation. His papers predominantly contain photographs and printed materials pertaining to airship design and airship travel, especially the U.S.S. Akron and the U.S.S. Macon

Fish, Floyd Hamilton Jr., Papers

Floyd Hamilton “Ham” Fish, Jr. (1923-2009) of Blacksburg, Virginia was a mechanical engineer and inventor who worked for Dupont in Wilmington, Delaware from 1954-1986, primarily in Pioneering Research. He was also an airship aficionado and assembled a small collection on the subject. His papers include correspondence, working/office files, original drawings by Fish of lighter-than-air craft, and Fish’s publications relating to his time working at DuPont, particularly on airship envelopes.

Elizabeth Parke Firestone (1897-1990) was the wife of Harvey S. Firestone, Jr., son of Firestone Tire & Rubber Company founder Harvey S. Firestone, Sr. Her papers include correspondence, speeches, writings, family photographs, newspaper clippings, phonodiscs, and medals and awards. The papers also include information relating to clubs and interests of Elizabeth Parke Firestone and her husband as well as the family's Akron, Ohio residence known as Twin Oaks. 


Findley, Theodore “Ted” Collection

Ted Findley was a founding member of the Canal Society of Ohio. The collection consists of photographs of the canals and locks, and files related to Findley’s work in the Canal Society of Ohio, as well as other local societies. The collection also consists of personal and professional correspondence, and various canal and local history related publications.

Fetzer, Herman and Hazel, Papers

Herman Fetzer (1899-1935) was a journalist in Akron, Ohio who worked for a number of local newspapers and contributed numerous articles and columns to several local and national publications, usually under the pen-name Jake Falstaff. After Fetzer’s death, his wife, Hazel, edited many of his works and published them posthumously. The papers consist of manuscripts, correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and miscellaneous material that document Fetzer’s life and work.

Family Services of Summit County Records

The Summit County Department of Family Services (now the Department of Job and Family Services) serves the people of Summit County, Ohio by providing social, financial, medical, and career-development services to better the lives of the members of the community. Fair Housing Contact Service Records

Fair Housing Contact Service (FHCS) is an independent non-profit agency which provides comprehensive educational opportunities, counseling, and support services to people concerned about fair housing in the Akron, Ohio area. The organization strives to prevent and eliminate housing discrimination and promote equal housing opportunity. The records include meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, membership and program information, newsletters, and newspaper clippings. Also included are research notes and a draft manuscript for Juliet Saltman's Open Housing as a Social Movement.

Collections are classified into the following broad categories:

  • University Archives contain historical resources that document the history and development of The University of Akron and its predecessor institutions.
  • Special Collections documents regional (mainly Akron and Summit County) history, and other designated collecting areas. Special Collections materials include personal and family papers and historical records of local governments, businesses, and civic and community organizations. Collection strengths are the history of the rubber and polymer industry, lighter-than-air flight, and Ohio canals. Special collections also include local government records for a nine county region.
  • Book collections include rare books and books documenting the history of the university, the region, and special topics.  All cataloged books are included in the UA Libraries Catalog.
