Mark Maliniak joined The University of Akron School of Music as Assistant Professor of Trumpet in the Fall of 2016. An established and sought-after orchestral musician, Mr. Maliniak has toured both nationally and internationally with The Cleveland Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, and Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has repeatedly appeared as Guest Principal Trumpet with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Jacksonville Symphony, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and Tucson Symphony Orchestra with whom he was a featured soloist in Charles Ives’ The Unanswered Question. He has performed with the Blossom Festival Band, Blossom Festival Orchestra, Canton Symphony Orchestra, Firelands Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, New World Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and Utah Symphony and has recorded with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Utah Symphony. In 2016 he performed as Co-Principal Trumpet of the International Chamber Orchestra of Puerto Rico for their inaugural festival season and as Assistant Principal Trumpet of the Britt Festival Orchestra in Jacksonville, Oregon. Mr. Maliniak previously held the position of Principal Trumpet with CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra and is currently Second Trumpet of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra.
A native of Cleveland, Mr. Maliniak attended the Baldwin-Wallace University Conservatory of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree studying with Cleveland Orchestra Second Trumpeter Jack Sutte. He received his Master of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with Michael Sachs, Principal Trumpet of The Cleveland Orchestra, and was the recipient of the Dr. Calvin E. Weber Award for excellence in trumpet performance. He has had additional studies with Jack Brndiar, Michael Miller, and Lyle Steelman. Mr. Maliniak has previously attended the Texas Music Festival, Music Academy of the West, Pacific Music Festival, Tanglewood Music Center, where he was the recipient of the 2011 Roger Voisin Trumpet Award, the Spoleto Festival, and the Verbier Festival. Mark Maliniak is a Conn-Selmer Performing Artist.
