Students in the Tuition Guarantee Program support parking and transportation services through a portion of their general fees, and are entitled to a parking permit at no additional charge, as well as unlimited access to the shuttle service.
Students (not in the tuition guarantee program) who take more than five credit hours in a semester on Main Campus are assessed a Transportation Fee for that term ($175 for the fall and spring semesters, $120 for summer). This fee allows students to receive a parking permit on request (at no additional charge), and allows students unlimited access to the shuttle service. Students who are not assessed this fee based on enrollment can opt to pay it in order to receive a parking permit.
All students who wish to receive a parking permit must fill out an application, and register a vehicle. You will need to know your license plate number to apply for a permit.
- Commuter students can apply for a parking permit using this online application. We will mail you your permit about 2 weeks before the start of the semester. Permit applications submitted after the mailing will be available for pick-up in the Parking and Transportation Office.
- Residence hall students can apply for a parking permit using this online application, and these permits will be available for pick-up in the Parking and Transportation Office.
Ticketing policy at the start of a semester
The best practice when it comes to obtaining a parking permit is to order your permit ahead of time and have it sent to your home (commuters only) or batched with your department for delivery (employees only). Residents should get their permits as soon as they are on campus. However, we understand schedule's are tight the week before classes and the first week of classes. Students, Faculty, and Staff will not be ticketed for not having a permit displayed the week prior to the start of a semester and the first week of a semester (for shorter summer sessions, this grace period is only 2 days).
For those displaying a valid parking permit, Parking and Transportation Services will also extend courtesy if the vehicle is mistakenly parked in a lot with the wrong designation (Residents in Commuter spaces and Commuters in Resident spaces) for the first TWO days of the semester.
This policy is not to allow students, faculty and staff to wait one week before getting their permits, but is to give them a reasonable amount of time to get situated on campus and educated about parking. Get your permit early and start your semesters hassle free!

Printed applications are only for individuals who DO NOT HAVE a valid UANET username and password, and will not be accepted from those who do.)

For those seeking accessibility permits
- All UA Permit Holders who wish to park in disability parking spaces on campus are required to submit their State Placard or Plate Registration.
- Placard/Plate registration is mailed to the holder, and a Duplicate Registration can be picked up from your local BMV office.
- Registration can be brought to the office by person, by fax (330-972-5452), or by mail.
- After the registration is verified an Accessibility Parking Permit will be issued at no additional cost and any current permit will be traded in.
Any faculty, staff, commuter or resident student with a temporary or permanent state issued placard (or disability license plate) is eligible to apply for and purchase a UA disability parking permit. Anyone who wishes to utilize disability parking spaces on campus is required to register their state placard (or disability license plate) with the Office of Parking Services. No one will be able to register a placard that belongs to another individual.
Disability placards are never valid in the following areas: non parking spaces, hatched access areas adjacent to a disability space, posted restricted spaces such state vehicle, visitor, departmental, drive lanes, fire lanes, etc.; and metered spaces (all fees must be paid at a meter). Please do not attempt to create your own parking spaces.
Please be aware that it is illegal to use a state handicap placard that was not issued to you. Any attempt to utilize someone else’s state placard or UA disability permit will result in a citation or the vehicle being towed. Providing false information to Parking Services in order to obtain a permit or any kind is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct and any attempt will be referred to Student Judicial Affairs for review.
To apply for an Accessibility Parking Permit please use the Commuter application, the Resident application, or the Faculty/Staff/GA application. After you fill out the main application you will be prompted to proceed to the Accessibility application. Be sure to fill out both applications and include accurate information from your state issued registered placard or plate. Remember, it is required that you bring your registration into the parking office for verification before you will receive your Accessibility Parking Permit.
If you do not have a copy of the registration for your state issued placard, you may request a “duplicate registration” for your placard from your local BMV office.
There is a BMV office located at 688 Wolf Ledges Pkwy. Akron, Ohio 44311.

Refunds and other notes
Park legally while you pick-up your parking permit: Anyone visiting the Parking and Transportation Services Office for the purpose of purchasing a permit may park in the gated visitor lot on Buchtel Avenue (directly across from the Parking Office) free of charge for one hour (if you stay longer than this you will be charged for the remainder of your time). If you do this, please bring the ticket that you received from the dispenser to the Parking Office for validation. If the visitor lot is full, then legal parking may be found at a meter. Unfortunately, we cannot reimburse you for money used to feed a meter.
Refund on your Parking Permit: We have simplified our refund policy. The new policy will take effect at the start of the fall 2017 term. Students taking 5 or fewer credit hours who have opted to pay the transportation fee in order to get a parking permit will have through the 14th day of the term to return the permit to the Parking Office for a 100% refund. After the 14th day no refunds will be given.
You must RETURN the permit that has been assigned to you to the Parking and Transportation Services Office in order to initiate a refund.
Attention: University of Akron Parking Permit Holders ONLY approved University of Akron offices are authorized to sell and distribute University parking permits. Possessing or displaying a STOLEN, FORGED, or ALTERED permit, or altering or manufacturing a University permit is a criminal offense and subject to criminal prosecution. The University of Akron Police Department and Parking and Transportation Services Department will be enforcing this policy.
