Statement from President Gary L. Miller on the MAC decision to postpone fall sports

08/08/2020

Dear Dear Members of the University Community:

As you may have seen, the MAC presidents decided today to postpone NCAA sports for the fall semester. The conference will begin planning to provide competitive opportunities for student athletes to compete in the spring.

This decision was taken in order to ensure the health and safety of our student athletes, their coaches and the many others who support our Zips teams. The safety protocols we have put in place for all students in order to open campus are difficult to maintain in competitive athletic activities.

I am aware this decision is disappointing for many of our student athletes who join us at The University of Akron to pursue a higher education while competing at the highest amateur level in a sport they love. I am proud of their courage and leadership in these most unusual times. I look forward to getting them back on the field as soon as possible.

I want to thank Athletic Director Larry Williams, his staff and all of our great coaches for their unwavering commitment to our student athletes, to this University and this community.  The young men and women in their charge have benefitted enormously from the demonstration of leadership from these colleagues.

We will continue to update the campus as plans for the spring progress.

Go Zips!

Gary L. Miller
President
The University of Akron
