Message from the Provost

August 25, 2010

Dear Faculty Colleagues:

I want to welcome you to the start of fall semester 2010 and I look forward to getting to know many of you this year.

Next week, I will be sending you a formal welcome to this academic year and lay out for you my initial thoughts and goals as we work together in designing The University of Akron's Academic Roadmap based upon the strategic planning work many of you participated in the previous year. However, I wanted to remind you of a few things as fall classes begin.

In our ongoing efforts to focus on student success, I ask for your assistance in notifying Dr. Karla Mugler at by Wednesday, Sept. 1 if you have students who have not attended your classes. Our colleagues in Enrollment Management will reach out to students you identify to ensure they are properly enrolled and that appropriate student support services are being provided as needed.

I am also requesting that faculty be sensitive to the schedules of our active and Reserve and National Guard soldiers/students who are enrolled in classes this fall. We have recently become aware of military commitments that may prevent these students from being present the first week or two of classes. These students, however, should have purchased their books and contacted you to work out appropriate accommodations related to their absences.

Finally, please remember that federal FERPA regulation prevents us from sharing course grades and other indicators of academic success with anyone other than our students -- this includes parents and guardians. This is true for all students over the age of 18. The only student populations this would not pertain to are our Post Secondary Enrollment Option and Early College High School students, most of whom are under the age of 18.

My best wishes to you as we begin together fall semester.
