barnes

April Barnes Gaines

I’m a 5th year PhD Candidate. I’m from High Point, NC. I entered with my Bachelors from the University of Miami (NOT of Ohio!). I LOVE my alma mater and I bleed orange and green. I’m a member of a historically black Greek sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and I am also an Army 2nd LT that commissioned through ROTC during my time in Miami. When I finish the program I will begin serving my time to the Army as a military psychologist. I received the 2-year HPSP scholarship from the Army to pay for the last two years of school to include a stipend (if you have ANY questions about this I’m available to chat!)

My research interests include most things related to Black women with a special focus on body-image. My dissertation is focused on body-image and disordered eating behaviors in Black military women. I am also passionate about understanding intersectionality from a Black feminist perspective (i.e., interlocking systems of oppression vs multiple identities). Professionally, I enjoy doing therapy and teaching. I love spending time with my husband, James, my cat, Kovu, and friends. You more than likely will find me traveling, checking out new places to eat & drink, going to the movies, or trying to host something at my house.

Methodologically speaking, I am interested in mixed methods research, treatment outcome research, and quantitative scale construction.
