Scholarships for undergraduates
UA offers thousands of scholarships annually. Learn more about our undergraduate and freshmen scholarship programs and eligibility below. Ensure you understand the application requirements and process for each scholarship you’re interested in.
UA undergraduate scholarships
For the scholarships in this section, we determine your eligibility using information from your admission application. You are automatically considered. There is no separate application.
Akron Guarantee Scholarship
► For freshmen: The Akron Guarantee Scholarship guarantees the annual renewal of your scholarship if you make progress toward a degree. It starts with an initial award of $1,000 to $7,500, depending on your high school GPA and ACT/SAT score. As you maintain good academic standing, the guaranteed scholarship increases in value as you earn 30, 60 and 90 credits, totalling $8,000 to $34,000 over four years. Akron Advantage Award
If you're a non-Ohio resident and you have a 3.00+ GPA and 20 ACT or 1020 SAT, you may receive a $3,000 Akron Advantage Award.
The Akron Advantage Award scholarship is renewable as long as you remain in good academic standing. This award will reduce your cost of tuition from $15,500 to $12,500. Only new, incoming freshmen are eligible for consideration. More about the Akron Advantage Award.
Akron Public Schools' Innovation Generation Scholarship
In a unique partnership, the Akron Public Schools and The University of Akron will offer a scholarship opportunity to qualified APS seniors to earn a bachelor's degree. Learn more about the scholarship.
For transfer students
The Akron Guarantee Scholarship for transfer students guarantees the annual renewal of your scholarship if you maintain good academic standing at UA (a 2.0 GPA). It starts with an initial award of $1,000 to $2,000. It also includes automatic scholarship upgrades as you earn 30, 60 and 90 credits, totaling up to $3,500. More scholarship opportunities for undergraduates
Unlike the scholarships above, the scholarships in this section have their own applications and renewal criteria.
Private/named scholarships (including endowed scholarships) are funded by external donors and awarded to students who meet criteria set by the donors. The criteria may include a demonstrated history of leadership, community service, financial need and/or other personal factors. These scholarships are not automatically renewed. An application is required each year for consideration.
- New Freshman Scholarship Application (printable application) — Priority deadline for freshman private/endowed scholarship applications is Jan. 31, 2020. Students must have high school transcripts and ACT or SAT scores submitted to the Office of Admissions by this date AND be admitted to The University of Akron to be considered for an early award. Students who submit applications after the priority deadline, but by June 1, may still be considered for scholarships that remain after priority awarding.

Underrepresented Students Scholarship
Scholarships of up to $3,500 may be awarded to entering freshmen, historically underrepresented, based on the criteria below. Recipients must be degree seeking and have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or minimum composite ACT score of 20 or minimum SAT score of 1020 (total score on SAT taken on or after March 1, 2018) or minimum SAT score of 950 (combined critical reading and math score on SAT taken before March 1, 2018).
Criteria may include: Ohio and Non-Ohio Residency; Ohio County of Residence; location of high school attended; financial need/economic background; extracurricular activities; first generation college attendance; evidence of leadership ability; creativity; community involvement; and students with a history of overcoming adversity.
Consideration will also be given to students from urban areas and Appalachian counties.
This scholarship is renewable provided that the student completes a minimum of 12 credits for fall and 12 credits for spring each year AND has a 2.75 cumulative GPA by the end of each spring semester.
Apply: Students should submit the scholarship application and personal statement no later than June 1.
