Welcome to the Surface and Optical Analysis (SOA) Facility of the University of Akron College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering.
The SOA Facility was established in 2012 through the generous support of the Department of Energy and the Austin BioInnovation Institute in Akron (ABIA). The Facility also received significant support from the College of PSPE and from the National Center for Education and Research on Corrosion and Materials Performance (NCERCAMP).
SOA is housed in the National Polymer Innovation Center at the University of Akron and is home to state-of the-art latest generation instruments including: X-Ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS), Scanning Auger Nanoprobe, Micro Computed Tomography Scanner (Micro CT), Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), Two Confocal Raman Microspectrometers (Raman), Small Angle X-Ray Scattering System (SAXS), Multiphoton Laser Scanning Microscope, Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope, Nanoindenter/Nanoscratch, Imaging Ellipsometer, Thin Film Physical Vapor Deposition System.
The SOA Facility serves all students and faculty of the University of Akron as well as other academic, governmental institutions, and US and international companies in facilitating and taking to the next level research and education in the areas of surface and interface analysis, x-ray diffraction and scattering, AFM, micro computed tomography, and advanced laser microscopy and spectroscopy. Training and full assistance when working on the SOA instruments is provided by professional staff. Problem solving consultations and participation in collaborative projects are always available.
