LIFE Awards 2024 — Award Descriptions


INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

*Award Requires Recommendation Application

A-Key Blue Award*
The A-Key Blue Award is presented annually to undergraduate students that demonstrate active involvement on campus and academic success. Students must have a minimum 2.3 GPA and be currently enrolled in at least 12 hours, or a fifth-year graduating senior who has consistently been a full-time student, or an average of 12 credit hours or more per semester for their college career.
A-Key Gold Award*
The A-Key Gold Award is presented annually to undergraduate students that distinguish themselves as some of this university's most actively involved student leaders and academic achievers. Students must have a minimum 2.3 GPA and be currently enrolled in at least 12 hours, or a fifth-year graduating senior who has consistently been a full-time student, or an average of 12 credit hours or more per semester for their college career.
Alumni Association Student Recognition Award*
The University of Akron Alumni Association represents more than 180,000 alumni worldwide. These alumni carry a longstanding tradition of excellence, service, and commitment to the campus community and beyond. The UA Alumni Association Student Recognition Award is presented annually to students who honor these values and do their utmost for the UA community.
Club Sports Individual Achievement Award 
Student Recreation and Wellness Services Club Sports Achievement Award is presented annually to one club sport individual for their outstanding achievements and exemplary service in their sport. 
Club Sports Advisor Excellence Award
Student Recreation and Wellness Services Club Sports Advisor Excellence Award is presented annually to a Club Sport Advisor who has lent their leadership and expertise to the goals and objectives of a University of Akron Club Sport. To be eligible, the advisor must have begun serving as the campus advisor in the beginning of the Fall 2023 semester and be nominated by a student involved in the registered student organization.
Diversity Award – Individual*
The Diversity Award - Individual is presented annually to a student, and/or faculty member that supports and advocates equity and social justice by collaborating with all segments of the campus community in an effort to improve campus climate.
Doctoral Scholar Award*
The Doctoral Scholar Award is presented annually to a Doctoral student that has proven exemplary scholastic excellence, outstanding campus involvement, commitment to community service, advanced knowledge of the scientific research process, expertise in the relevant findings on their field, skill in conducting research and analyzing data, and the ability to communicate complex ideas in a simplified manner to a variety of audiences. Applicants must have a minimum 3.75 cumulative GPA.
Good Neighbor of the Year*
The Department of Student Life Exceptional Civic Engagement Award is presented annually to a student that had become distinguished in a civic engagement accomplishment and has contributed significantly to the betterment of the campus community and/or the community beyond the UA campus. To be eligible, the undergraduate student must possess a minimum 2.5 GPA and be currently enrolled in at least 12 credit hours.
Faculty Engagement Award
The Faculty Engagement Award is presented annually to an outstanding faculty member who has gone out of their way to engage students inside and outside the classroom to create an enhanced learning environment. This award highlights a faculty member who has gone above and beyond the normal student-teacher interaction and has thus shown a personal interest in the growth of their students’ lives. 

Graduate Excellence & Leadership Award*
The Graduate Excellence & Leadership Award is presented annually to one master’s degree student and one doctoral degree student for their excellence in scholarship and research while attending the University of Akron. Individuals eligible for this award are graduate students from underrepresented groups who have completed at least 12 graduate credit hours and has held a leadership role either on campus or within their community during the past year.

Intramural Sports Individual Achievement Award
The Intramural Sports Individual Achievement Award is presented to one individual annually to recognize efforts in sportsmanship and leadership, and those who have made a positive impact on the Intramural Sports program. To be eligible, the applicant must be in good standing and have a positive sportsmanship record for the year. 
Masters’ Scholar Award*
The Master's Scholar Award is presented annually to a master's student who has demonstrated exemplary scholastic excellence, outstanding campus involvement, commitment to community service, advanced knowledge of the scientific research process, expertise in the relevant findings of their field, and the ability to communicate complex ideas in a simplified manner to a variety of audiences. To be eligible, students must have a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA. 
Outstanding Campus Advisor Award
The Department of Student Life Outstanding Campus Advisor Award is presented annually to a Campus Advisor who has lent their leadership and expertise to the goals and objectives of a registered student organization. To be eligible, the advisor must have begun serving as the Campus Advisor in the beginning of the Fall 2023 semester and be nominated by a student involved in the registered student organization. 
Outstanding Officer Award
The Department of Student Life Outstanding Officer Award is presented annually to an officer of a registered student organization on campus.  To be eligible, the undergraduate student must possess a minimum 2.5 grade point average and must have served as an officer of the organization since (at least) the Fall 2023 semester.  
Outstanding Adult/Nontraditional Learner Award*
The Outstanding Adult/Nontraditional Learner Award is presented annually to adult/nontraditional learners that have exhibited outstanding achievements while pursuing a degree at The University of Akron. Applicants must be 25 years or older, currently enrolled in at least 6 credit hours while working full time or enrolled in 12 credit hours, have completed a minimum of 64 credit hours and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. 
Outstanding First Year Student Award* 
The Outstanding First Year Student Award is presented annually to a first year student based on the depth and breadth of their contributions to the University of Akron community within the areas of involvement, leadership and scholarship. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA, be in good standing and have completed at least 12 credit hours.
Outstanding Sophomore Award*
The Omicron Delta Kappa Outstanding Sophomore Award is presented annually to students showing exemplary academic work, involvement in extracurricular activities, and a broad base of awareness and leadership. All undergraduate applicants must have between 30-59.99 credits or have progressed to their second year in their academic program at the time of submission and hold a minimum 3.5 GPA.

Outstanding Junior Award*
The Outstanding Junior Award is presented annually to a junior student showing exemplary academic work, involvement in extracurricular activities, and broad base of awareness and leadership. Applicants must have been 60-89.99 credits or have progressed to their third year in their academic program at the time of submission and hold a minimum 3.6 GPA.

Student Employee Excellence Award*
The Student Employee Excellence Award is presented annually to an individual that works at an on-campus student employment job and has provided significant contributions, demonstrated outstanding skill sets (examples-leadership, critical thinking, communication, teamwork, professionalism, etc.), and made a positive impact to their department. To be eligible, students must be a current undergraduate or graduate student employee and have worked at their on-campus student employment job for at least 6 months.
Student Recreation Outstanding Student Member Award

The Student Recreation Outstanding Student Member Award is presented annually to a student who has positively impacted or enhanced the campus community through their involvement within SRWS programs or services. A student nominee must meet the following criteria: 

1.       Demonstrates positive leadership qualities within SRWS programs or services  

2.       Displays dedication to programs and services that enhances the UA community and overall student experience for others 

3.       Minimum of 2.5 GPA

The Richard L. Hansford NRHH Pillar Award*

This person has fully demonstrated that they hold the pillars of the National Residence Hall Honorary (Service, Advocacy, Recognition, and Leadership) to the highest standard. From being involved on-campus at the University of Akron, this person has shown that they are a leader among their peers and has a passion for keeping the university strong by demonstrating these four pillars. This person must have at least a 2.5 GPA and can be a member of any class (first year, sophomore, junior, senior). This student can be full-time or part-time and is not required to live on campus.

Top 10 Senior Award*
The Top 10 Senior Award is presented annually to 10 seniors who show quality, depth, and breadth of involvement in a variety of campus, athletic, and/or community activities. Students also must show high scholastic achievement. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA, be in good standing, have completed at least 90 credit hours, and their anticipated graduation date must be May, August or December of the current year. This award requires 3 letters of recommendation (academic success and engagement, involvement on campus, and community-based activities). 

TEAM/ORGANIZATION AWARDS

Club Sports Achievement Award (Team)
Student Recreation and Wellness Services Club Sports Achievement Award is presented annually to one club sport team for their outstanding achievements and exemplary service in their sport.  
Diversity Award – Organization*
The Diversity Award - Organization is presented annually to a student organization that supports and advocates equity and social justice by collaborating with all segments of the campus community in an effort to improve campus climate. 
Exceptional Civic Engagement Award – Organization
The Department of Student Life Exceptional Civic Engagement Award is presented annually to a student organization that has become distinguished in a civic engagement accomplishment and has contributed significantly to the betterment of the campus community and/or the community beyond the UA campus. 

Impact Award
The Department of Student Life Impact Award is presented annually to a University of Akron registered student organization that has taken an innovative approach to programming, educating students, addressing a problem on campus, or otherwise improving the campus community. Organizations are asked to provide details of the event, program, or initiative and describe how this innovative approach exemplifies excellence and the values of The University of Akron.

Intramural Sports Team Achievement Award
The Intramural Sports Team Achievement Award is presented to one Intramural Sports team annually to recognize efforts in sportsmanship and leadership, and those who have made a positive impact on the Intramural Sports program. To be eligible, the applicants must be in good standing and have a positive sportsmanship record for the year. 

Rupert Latture Memorial New Student Organization Award
The Omicron Delta Kappa Rupert Latture Memorial Award is presented annually to a student or alumnus of The University of Akron for the initiative set forth in being the founder of an organization on this campus that is flourishing and shows promise of a productive future. This award was established in memory of Rupert Latture, a man who envisioned a society in which leaders from all facets of University life could come together and positively impact the university and society.

Student Organization Excellence Award*
This award is given to a registered student organization that has excelled in all areas of student organization management. The recipient(s) will demonstrate how their annual goals have been achieved and how the organization furthers its mission through its programming, financial and organizational management, member development, and contributions to the campus and/or local community. This award may be given to no more than three organizations per year.
