Shawn Bixler is a College Lecturer.  She joined the University of Akron in 1999 as a part-time instructor and was hired full time in 2001. 

Shawn earned a B. A. in Education and Psychology from Malone College, as well as her teacher certification. She launched her teaching career as an elementary/middle school teacher. During those ten years she also taught summer school for migrant students, who were primarily African American and Hispanic. She returned to Malone College to earn her master’s degree in Community Counseling and while in the process of pursing licensure as a clinical counselor, decided to specialize in career and rehabilitation counseling. She applied her knowledge to assisting disabled veterans for the Veteran’s Administration. 

Shawn continues to work with diverse populations as a coordinator in Developmental Programs. In addition, she has served on the First Year Experience Task Force as a dimension co-chair and is currently a member of the Diversity subcommittee. Recently Shawn also became a member of the University of Akron Academic Leadership Forum, class of 2008-2009.
