Returning at the age of 32 years old, Mike has had to make many sacrifices to work toward advancing his education. He believes that the most challenging barrier has been the financial strain of paying for tuition, textbooks, and increased daily living expenses. In order to achieve his dream of becoming an engineer, Mike chose to leave a lucrative career as a mechanic. Mike attributes his outstanding 3.85 GPA to the help of the Osher Foundation Reentry Scholarship.

Anne Boswell

Anne decided to enter college in 2007 after taking the Paraprofessional Praxis. Given her exceptional scoring results, her love of teaching children, and the support of her family, she enrolled in college courses required to reach toward her goal of becoming an educator of children. Anne has received this scholarship twice and considers the Osher Reentry Scholarship to be both an honor and a blessing to her academic career, and is extremely grateful for the opportunity.

Jennifer is a senior pursuing a degree in geology. She decided to return to college after much contemplation, as she was initially intimidated by the financial investment that is necessary. She attributes her confidence to the experience of being a transfer student, as this allowed her to enter with a new perspective. She has received this scholarship for a second year and feels energized and affirmed by the recognition.

Michael Kral 

Michael chose to return to school and further his education after a long career as a landscaper. Being good at math, having an affinity for maps, the outdoors, and an interest in history, led Michael to pursue a career in the surveying field. He is also actively involved in the student group GPS (Gathering of Potential Surveyors) and the PLSO (Professional Land Surveyors of Ohio).

Dana is currently pursing a bachelor's degree in computer science.

Valerie May Valerie May

Valerie will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education, and has secured dual licensure in secondary math education and multiage French language education. She chose this field, given her background and interests. Valerie is French by birth, and has always had a strong interest for the discipline of mathematics. Throughout her life, she also found herself having a natural passion for teaching others.

Roxanne is a hardworking full-time student, single mother of three children, and has full custody of her niece. She is determined to seek career advancement through higher education, so that she can best provide for her children. Roxanne feels that without this scholarship, she would not have been able to afford this semester. She believes that this scholarship opportunity will allow individuals like her to be able to continue their education.

Tanya feels that she is very fortunate for the opportunity that has been awarded to her. The financial support of the scholarship has allowed her to focus on research, as opposed to working a part-time job to pay for education costs. She believes that this will make her more desirable to future employers once she has graduated.

Garth is working towards his bachelor's degree in business and has found the difficulties of a college student numerous. This scholarship has helped alleviate some of the financial burdens and has made it possible for him to focus less on working and more on studying.

Having completed her associate's degree in community services, Roxanne is continuing on with a bachelor's degree in social work. 
UPDATE:  Graduated in Fall 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and in Spring 2012 with a Master of Social Work. She is currently working in Medina.

Melanie recently returned to college in order to work toward a more fulfilling career. She will be the first in her family to obtain a college education. Melanie is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in social work, and intends to complete a master's degree in the future. Given that the financial assistance has allowed her to strive toward excellence, she is happy that her career goals are now within reach.

Richard Teeple

Richard Teeple

After 12 years of being away from school, Richard decided to further his education and pursue another degree. He has worked in the automotive field for approximately 14 years as a certified automotive technician at a local dealership. His goal is to be a field service engineer for one of the major auto manufacturers. This scholarship has helped make returning to school a reality, and has lessened the financial burden for his family.

E.J. is a Communications major and looks forward to graduating soon. Since being awarded this scholarship, he was able to concentrate on his studies and find a reasonable balance between work and school. E.J. hopes to become a corporate trainer and help others to excel toward their highest potential. He also wishes to inspire others to attend The University of Akron and finish a degree, as he did.
