Sexual Assault Awareness Month

04/03/2017

Dear Student,

I hope you had an enjoyable spring break.  As you return to campus rejuvenated, I wanted to reach out to you regarding an important matter.  In striving to foster an environment of learning and respect, we must make the elimination of sexual violence from our community a worthy and achievable goal. You might be surprised to learn how far our University has come in this pursuit, and how easily you can contribute to the eradication of this behavior on campus.

The University of Akron was among the first universities in the state to conduct a sexual assault survey to assess the experiences of students with violence and prevalence of assaults on campus. We welcomed the Rape Crisis Center to campus with offices in the Student Wellness and Recreation Center, and in the Student Union, a step that other universities are now modeling. We also have developed an array of programs, services and campaigns to educate students about healthy relationships. I strongly recommend you learn more about these programs, if not for your own use perhaps to help a friend.

For example, Sexual Assault Awareness Month extends through April. Several events are planned throughout the month, but I want to draw your attention to one in particular: a presentation by Mike Pistorino at 6 p.m. today (April 3) in the Student Union Ballroom. He is a survivor of child sexual abuse, drug abuse, homelessness, and prison. Mike overcame enormous odds to become a prolific public speaker and champion for survivors of sexual abuse, as well as a Cleveland business leader and father of three daughters. His talk is free and open to all.

Additionally, you can personally contribute to our efforts to eliminate sexual violence by participating in this important statewide student survey. It’s easy, it doesn’t take much of your time, and the results will be used to guide additional action on campus.

Thank you for completing the survey and thank you for being a valued member of The University of Akron community.

Sincerely,
