The Office of Accessibility will be in the Student Union during the lunch hour on Monday providing educational information about the Summit County sales tax issue that is designated to support the Metro bus service. This issue is on the ballot Tuesday.

“Many UA students, faculty and staff, including those who use the services of our department, depend on Metro bus service to get to class and to work, so we want to get the word out about this ballot issue and its importance,” said Dr. Stacey Moore, director of UA’s Office of Accessibility.

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams play Saturday in Rhodes Arena.

At 2 p.m., you can see UA’s Keyla Snowden continue her mastery from beyond the three-point line as the women’s team faces Miami. At Buffalo on Wednesday, Snowden moved into fourth place on the Mid-American Conference’s list for most threes in a single season with 80. For students, admission is free with a valid Zip Card.

At 7 p.m., the men's team (19-8) will play Buffalo as Akron looks to lock down one of the top four seeds (and the first-round bye that comes with it) in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. For students, admission is free. Plus you can ride the free Roo Express shuttle to and from the game.

As always, more information is available at www.gozips.com.

Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare - It's Mardi Gras in Sandefur Theatre! Feb. 28 - March 8

The University of Akron to present William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night

Akron OH – The University of Akron School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration will present Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare Feb. 28, 29 and March 1, 6, 7 and 8 at 8 p.m. and March 2 at 2 p.m. in Sandefur Theatre in Guzzetta Hall, across from E. J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall. In conjunction with the public performances, a student matinee will be offered to local middle schools and high schools on February 29.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, $6 for seniors and UA faculty, staff, and students. The ticket office opens one hour before each performance. For reservations or more information call 330-972-7895 or visit http://www.uakron.edu/dtaa.

Twelfth Night is directed by University of Akron Assistant Professor Stephen Skiles, who recently joined the UA faculty as the inaugural holder of the Paul Daum Professorship in Theatre Arts. Before coming to Akron, Skiles worked in New York City and most recently as an actor, director, and teacher in Cincinnati.

Twelfth Night features separated twins, mistaken identities, an elaborate hoax, and finally the victory of true love. Skiles feels that for twenty-first century audiences the festive chaos of this script suggests the revelries associated with Mardi Gras. For this reason, he – as well as scene designer Adel Migid and costume designer Pamela Crevcoure – are setting this production in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Skiles promises a few surprises in this “upbeat and contemporary” production.

Skiles says he selected Twelfth Night for his first production at The University of Akron because “I have always loved the play and find the story to be very funny. At the same time, it’s very poignant and relevant today. The idea behind the play is to remind us to take time to have a good time. It is easy in today’s world to get caught up in the importance of our work and our day-to-day activities. Shakespeare reminds us to take a few moments out of that hectic and overwhelming schedule to breathe, relax and even have a little fun.”

Florez to perform Tuesday, March 4 March 4
7:17 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The band took a significant break this summer as Erik Huffman (vocals, bass guitar) competed on the CBS reality show "Survivor: China." Although the interruption disappointed fans craving live performances, the experience raised the band's ever-augmenting profile. The music of FLOREZ is a tasty blend of groove-driven rock and roll and radio-ready pop melodies that stands out in any venue. While on the stage they can be seen with such performers as Gavin Degraw, Josh Kelley, Better than Ezra, and Blues Traveler.

iPod Nano to be given away as door prize.

Provocative British Photographer to visit UA-lecture at Akron Art Museum March 6

spacer image
The Mary Schiller Myers School of Art presents celebrated British photographer, photographic historian and cultural critic Martin Parr on Thursday, March 6th, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. at the Akron Art Museum’s Charles and Jane Lehner Auditorium (One South High, Akron) for his lecture, “Photobiography.” This lecture, which is part of the Fred and Laura Ruth Bidwell Photography Series, is free and open to the public.

"With photography, I like to create fiction out of reality. I try and do this by taking society's natural prejudice and giving this a twist." Parr uses a wry sense of humor to put a spin on the mundane. Parr's unique style and vision satirizes contemporary life by mixing irony and a critical eye, without crossing over into caricature.

Since the 1970s, Martin Parr has dealt with the issues of modern society in his work, focusing on subject matter such as consumerism, mass-tourism and foreign travel, food and fad, and the complexities of relationships.

In 1994, Parr became a full member of the Magnum Photo Agency. His work can be found in a list of international collections including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgium, the Centro de Arte in Salamanca, Spain, and the International Center of Photography (ICP) in NYC. He is currently a Professor of Photography at the University of Wales, Newport campus.

The Fred and Laura Ruth Bidwell Photography Series has been established by the Bidwells to bring visiting photographers and artists twice annually to The University of Akron to present public lectures and master classes with students in the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art.

Zips Programming Network invites you to "I Am Legend" starring Will Smith playing March 6 and 7 at 8pm at The Student Union Gardner Theatre.

Here is a synopsis of the movie:
Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable...and manmade. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City...and maybe the world. But he is not alone. He is surrounded by "the Infected"--victims of the plague who have mutated into carnivorous beings who can only exist in the dark and who will devour or infect anyone or anything in their path. Perhaps mankind's last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But his blood is also what The Infected hunt, and Neville knows he is outnumbered and quickly running out of time.

The movie is free to all UA students with a Zip Card.

Imagining a World Without Gender? April 3
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Judith Lorber will speak on imagining a world without gender.

Feminists have tried to restructure and change the dynamics of interaction between women and men, to redress gender imbalances in politics and control of valued resources, to alter gender-discriminatory social practices, and to challenge the invisibility and "naturalness" of what is taken for granted about women and men. But they have not pushed these agendas to the point of calling for the abolition of gender boundaries and categories, with the goal of doing away with them altogether. Judith Lorber argues that it is the bureaucratic and legal binary structure of gender that produces gender inequality and therefore needs to be dismantled. She raises the question of whether it is possible to have a world without gender.
