Leaving for spring break? Here are some tips to secure your stuff
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
UA's police officers offer the following suggestions to you as you prepare for spring break.

"If students follow these tips, the number of incidents we see would decrease," said UA Police Chief Paul Callahan.

  1. Do not load your vehicle the night before you leave on break. It only takes a minute to break out a window and steal the items.
  2. Lock your doors and windows when leaving your living quarters, no matter how long or short the time span. Many times a burglar enters a residence through an unlocked door or window.
  3. Do not leave money or valuables in plain view in your home or car. With your car, take the time to secure your valuables in the trunk.
  4. Engrave a security number on all valuables (including textbooks). Engravers can be borrowed from the University of Akron Police Department. Inventory these items, too. Make sure that you have the make, model and serial number of each item written down and kept in a safe place.
  5. Criminals look for easy opportunities such as stealing books to be exchanged for cash at local bookstores.
  6. Report suspicious activity to the police. The concept of crime prevention invites all segments of the community to actively participate in the reduction of crime.

You can reach the UA police department at any hour at 330-972-7123.

Are you in good academic standing?
Do you enjoy meeting new people and talking about your University?
Can you be a mentor to new students?

How do I become a host?
Easy! Contact Rachel Mesek in the Office of Admissions for an application. You’ll be contacted for an interview and training session.

Only two nights left for 'Twelfth Night' at Guzzetta Hall March 7 - March 8
8:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University of Akron School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration will present Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare March 7-8 at 8 p.m. in Sandefur Theatre in Guzzetta Hall, across from E. J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, $6 for seniors and UA faculty, staff, and students. The ticket office opens one hour before each performance. For reservations or more information call 330-972-7895 or visit www.uakron.edu/dtaa.

Twelfth Night is directed by University of Akron Assistant Professor Stephen Skiles, who recently joined the UA faculty as the inaugural holder of the Paul Daum Professorship in Theatre Arts. Before coming to Akron, Skiles worked in New York City and most recently as an actor, director, and teacher in Cincinnati.

Twelfth Night features separated twins, mistaken identities, an elaborate hoax, and finally the victory of true love. Skiles feels that for twenty-first century audiences the festive chaos of this script suggests the revelries associated with Mardi Gras. For this reason, he – as well as scene designer Adel Migid and costume designer Pamela Crevcoure – are setting this production in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Skiles promises a few surprises in this “upbeat and contemporary” production.

Skiles says he selected Twelfth Night for his first production at The University of Akron because “I have always loved the play and find the story to be very funny. At the same time, it’s very poignant and relevant today. The idea behind the play is to remind us to take time to have a good time. It is easy in today’s world to get caught up in the importance of our work and our day-to-day activities. Shakespeare reminds us to take a few moments out of that hectic and overwhelming schedule to breathe, relax and even have a little fun.”

Come see Magican Justing Kredible on Saturday March 8th at 2:00 PM in the Student Union Gardner Theater! Justin is part of the sibs weekend events!

As stated on his Website:

Justin Kredible's vigorous mix of comedy and magic has quickly established him as one of America's premiere performers. As a regular correspondent on the 'Rachael Ray' show and a crowd favorite at colleges and events around the country, Justin lives up to his recent title of "Entertainer of the Year 2007" from Campus Activities Magazine.

It's been a busy year for this young prestidigitator. This past summer he co-starred in the hit MTV show "Room 401". He's also the host and creator of the video-on-demand TV series, "Turning Tricks", on the Lifeskool network.

Justin Kredible (real name Justin Willman) began performing at the age of twelve. After breaking both of his arms in a uniquely daring bicycle accident while trying to impress some girls, the young Justin started learning card tricks as an alternative to physical therapy. Cutting his teeth in the rough suburban streets of St. Louis, Missouri, he officially turned pro when his parents hired him to entertain at his sister Ashley’s fifth birthday party. (He bombed, but was not deterred)

Check him out at his website or type his name in on YouTube!

As a warm-up for the play, Eric Wasserman, Visiting Assistant Professor of Creative Writing, will chair a panel discussion focusing on HUAC and its impact on The Crucible. UA to test tornado warning system twice on Wednesday March 12
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University plans to test its outdoor warning system at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 12. The system is routinely tested on the second Wednesday of every month unless threatening weather is expected.

You do not need to take any action when you hear Wednesday’s test. This test is being conducted to ensure that the system is working properly and that students are familiar with the siren.

If a tornado warning is issued for the city, the outdoor warning system would sound and declare the tornado warning. You should enter a nearby building and look for a lower-level location without windows. Stairwells are well constructed and provide excellent shelter as long as they are without windows. Likewise, restrooms usually provide good shelter. Do not take shelter in large rooms or areas such as gyms with large roof spans.

ATTENTION ALL GRADUATE STUDENTS!!!

THE BIGGEST EVENT FOR U of A GRADUATE STUDENTS IS COMING UP! REGISTER FOR THIS FREE EVENT & LUNCH!

Graduate Student Government will be holding our First Annual GSG Colloquium. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 16, 2008
(8am-4pm) in the Student Union Ballroom. Lunch will be provided for all registered Graduate Students. This year's theme is: “Graduate Today, Leader Tomorrow: Preparing Our Graduate Students for What’s Next”

EVENT DESCRIPTION
The GSG Colloquium, a day long series hosted by The University of Akron’s Graduate Student Government (GSG), will afford graduate students the opportunity to increase knowledge and awareness on a broad front as they embark upon graduate student life, are in the midst of their research, or are ready to enter their field. This event will focus on and provide educational, cultural, and professional lectures from University and Community Leaders/Representatives.

Graduate students attending this colloquium will gain insight into other areas of academia, business, and government, as well as learn about the importance of cultural competence and issues associated with diversity. In addition, this event will also afford graduate students the opportunity to meet with representatives from Career Management regarding resume/vitae building and formatting relevant to their field, as well as interviewing techniques and other related topics essential to enhancing their professional development. The panel will be somewhat informal to promote dialogue between the speakers and the students. It is a great honor to have some very distinguished professionals, from the University and Community, to speak to our Graduate Students; because after all, if today’s leaders do not encourage and mentor future leaders, who will?

The list of speakers and other schedule information can be found on the Graduate School website at http://www.uakron.edu/gradsch/

MUST REGISTER BY APRIL 7th!!! Please register via email to Nichole Bunner, GSG VP at nmb1@uakron.edu.
