Message from President Proenza about Northern Illinois tragedy

Yesterday . . .

. . . we were painfully reminded again about the fragile nature of life and the difficulty of preventing random acts of terror by troubled individuals. I am sure that you share my sense of sadness and outrage at what happened at Northern Illinois University. I will be extending condolences to their president and campus community on behalf of all of us.

While incidents such as this remain extremely rare, I would like to remind you of security measures already in place at UA and review some that are under development:

  • This year, we will add six additional officers to our campus police department. Our officers are highly trained, and they have full law-enforcement authority from the state of Ohio.

  • All of our officers have completed a training course that deals specifically with situations such as the one at Northern Illinois. Our officers are trained to respond immediately to such situations.

  • Our police department has mutual-aid agreements that enable fast emergency assistance from the Akron Police Department, Metro SWAT units of Summit and Portage counties, Summit County Sheriff’s Office, Cuyahoga Falls Police Department and Barberton SWAT unit, as well as law enforcement agencies near our Wayne College campus.

  • Our police officers patrol campus in cars, on motorcycles and on bicycles to increase visibility and to provide quicker response to emergency situations.

  • We have improved our ability to communicate emergency messages to students, faculty and staff. Broadcast capabilities to warn of emergency conditions include our outdoor warning system, a reverse 9-1-1 system, emergency text messaging and campus-wide e-mail. We also have improved our ability to post emergency information at once on the University’s home page.

  • Enhanced 9-1-1 capabilities were recently installed on campus. This technology provides improved caller-ID capabilities and allows for emergency notification to all campus telephones simultaneously. A GPS-compatible system, it has future uses including programming all cell phones for immediate location.

If you have not already done so, I would urge you to sign up for our Z-Alert emergency text-messaging service. The University does not charge for the service. Here are instructions to sign up:

  1. Go to ZipLine and log in with your UANet ID and password.
  2. Click on the Students tab, if you are not there already.
  3. In the Z-Alert Text Messaging box, click on “student sign up.”
  4. Follow the instructions from there.

I know that students receive many text messages throughout a typical day. If you are a Z-Alert subscriber, please give immediate attention to any emergency text messages you receive from the University.

Tragedies like yesterday’s affect people differently. If you, or someone you know, would benefit by talking with a counselor, our Counseling, Testing and Career Center in Simmons Hall 306 is prepared to help. Drop in or call the center at 330-972-7082. And please do not hesitate to call our police department at 330-972-7123 if our officers can ever be of service to you.

We will continue to do all we can to provide a safe learning environment.

With every good wish,

Sincerely,
Luis Proenza
