Electrical work in the Polsky Deck over Spring Break March 20 - March 21
Time: n/a

spacer image
Next week, contractors will take advantage of Spring Break
to complete electrical updates to the Polsky Deck. Throughout the week, areas of
the deck will be blocked off daily, with those areas changing day to day. There
will still be ample parking in the deck because of lower demand. There should be
no interruption in lighting.

House party and large-scale projections part of European generative artist’s residency March 24 - March 28
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Europe’s leading generative artist, Marius Watz, will be in residence March 24-28 at the Mary Schiller Myers School of Art. Watz’s residency features an array of free public events and coincides with "Marius Watz: ElectroPlastiques," an exhibition of his work in the school's Emily Davis Gallery in Folk Hall from March 24 to April 23.

A native of Norway, Watz uses the computer to generate work that he describes as “a particular brand of visual hedonism, marked by colorful organic shapes and a 'more is more' attitude.” Most of his works deal with drawing machines implemented in software and live visuals for music, in addition to his signature large-scale projections.

Watz will talk about his work during a free public lecture at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 24, in the auditorium of Folk Hall, 150 E. Exchange St., Akron.

During the evenings of March 25 to 27, the soaring exterior walls of E.J. Thomas Hall, 198 Hill St., will be illuminated with eye-popping projections and sounds of music which include Watz’s abstract self-generating designs.

Also highlighting Watz’s residency is “EJ.mix,” a lively dialogue and dance party on the stage of E.J. Thomas Hall on Thursday, March 27. Free and open to the public, the event begins at 7 p.m. Audience members are invited to enter through the stage door on Hill Street.

During a lively dialogue moderated by Matthew Kolodziej, UA associate professor of art, Watz and UA biologist Francisco Moore will explore the intersections of art and science by discussing animated life in real and virtual worlds. Both artist and scientist find common ground through the use of artificial intelligence in their work. Watz creates self-replicating visual and melodic installations while Moore studies evolutionary patterns in living systems, using computer simulations to duplicate genetic processes.

Following the dialogue, the EJ.mix party begins at 8 p.m. as the stage of E.J. Thomas is transformed into a European dance club – showcasing visual art and live house dance music by DJ Pi(iT) as experienced in the clubs of Chicago, New York, and Germany. Light refreshments and a cash bar will be available.

From March 24 to April 23, the Emily Davis Gallery will showcase Watz's generative work, including large scale projections of ElectroPlastiques #1 and #2, five rapid prototypes, large format printouts, and his Universal Digest Machine, which received an Honorary Mention at Ars Electronica — the world’s leading media arts festival in Linz, Austria. The Emily Davis Gallery in Folk Hall is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays with evening hours on Wednesdays and Thursdays until 9 p.m.

Watz currently lives in Berlin where he edits the Generator.x blog (a platform for generative art and design) and prepares future Generator.x events including concert tours, exhibitions and conferences. In addition, Watz travels around the world to teach workshops in computational design and generative art (http://www.generatorx.no).

The Maruis Watz residency and events are the culmination of a yearlong project conceived and organized by UA graphic design students Nate Mueller and Kirk Mueller and faculty advisor Matthew Kolodziej with support of the UA Mary Schiller Myers School of Art and its Graphic Design Program. Additional support for the events comes from The University of Akron and its E.J. Thomas Hall; RCS Corporation, Cleveland; the Apple Campus Reps; and DJ Pi(it).
