The University of Akron’s Western Equestrian Team is only in its second year, but that hasn’t stopped the team from having riders competing at the regional and national level. The equestrian team shows with the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). The western shows have six different divisions, geared to all levels of riding, from beginner horsemanship to open horsemanship and reining. Recently, the Western Team completed its regular season, finishing as the Region Reserve High Point Team (second of eight teams) behind Ohio State. Ashley Fuchs, the club president and open and reining rider for the team, earned the title of Reserve High Point Rider in the region and will advance to the National Semi-finals in Cazenovia, NY on March 29 and 30. Fellow teammate, Michael Pancoe, an alumni rider in horsemanship and reining, qualified to show at the National Semi-finals by placing first in his qualifying class in reining at the regional finals. If the riders place in the top four in New York, they will advance to IHSA Nationals, which will be held at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in May. Imagining a World Without Gender? April 3
7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image

spacer image
Judith Lorber will give a lecture on "Imagining a World Without Gender?" Feminists have tried to restructure and change the dynamics of interaction between women and men, to redress gender imbalances in politics and control of valued resources, to alter gender-discriminatory social practices, and to challenge the invisibility and "naturalness" of what is taken for granted about women and men. But they have not pushed these agendas to the point of calling for the abolition of gender boundaries and categories, with the goal of doing away with them altogether. Judith Lorber argues that it is the bureaucratic and legal binary structure of gender that produces gender inequality and therefore needs to be dismantled. She raises the question of whether it is possible to have a world without gender.
