Open windows can let in more than fresh spring air
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Flip-flop weather is here, along with it comes the temptation to throw open windows and prop open doors to let in the spring air. But before you do that, bear in mind that unlocked doors and windows can also make it easier for someone to walk in and swipe your stuff.

“Many times, the burglar enters through an unlocked door or window,” says Paul Callahan, chief of the University’s police department. “Unless you are right there, I would recommend keeping windows and doors locked.”

That’s true even if you are going to be away for just a few minutes, Callahan adds. “It takes only a matter of seconds for someone to enter, grab something and leave,” he says.

Here are some other warm-weather tips:
  • The theft of books and laptops tends to increase toward the end of a semester, especially in the spring. Don’t leave them unattended.
  • Lock your car doors and windows, and don’t leave valuables in plain sight. Instead, put them in the trunk.
  • Travel in twos or more when venturing out late at night.
  • Holding a party? Know your guests. Designate someone to stay sober. Do not serve alcohol to minors. Offer food. Know that off-campus violations of the law can lead to University sanctions, too.
  • If you spot anything unusual, don’t hesitate to call the University police at 330-972-7123. In fact, it may be useful to program that number into your cell phone (9-1-1 will work, too, and that call will go to the Akron city police).

UA wants to know what you think about the issue of smoking on campus. Let us know by completing this short online survey. A campus wellness committee will use the results to form recommendations that will go to the University administration in June.

The survey asks for your opinion about the University’s current smoking policies and the University’s enforcement of those policies, among other questions.

The survey will be available until May 9.

Study and teach in France for 12-weeks during the Fall Semester of 2008!

The College of Education’s Department of Curricular and Instructional Studies is happy to announce we have received funding for a second year to offer an amazing opportunity to students studying to become educators.

The Franco-American Teachers-in-Training Institute is recruiting students for a 12-week internship in France during fall semester of 2008. All participants will receive free airfare, free housing, and a monthly living stipend.

Teachers-in-training will take part in a seminar series discussing French language, culture, and education, followed by placement in schools throughout France. This year’s participants went to Paris, Amien, Rouen, Poitiers, Orleans, Bordeaux, Montpelier, Strasburg, Nancy and Reims. It is a wonderful opportunity to examine best practices by teaching in your content area (in English) and learning in a new culture.

Qualified undergraduate and graduate students will be seeking licensure in middle level or secondary education, have passed their content Praxis II exams, and completed their educational coursework all prior to Fall 2008. The ability to speak French is not required, but having studied French for at least one semester or during high school is required. Enthusiasm for learning is a must! Applications are also being accepted from recent or upcoming graduates who wish to begin their graduate studies, and participate in a unique and exciting program.

Donate Life --- Be A Hero (and get a free t-shirt!) April 18 - May 9
Time: n/a

spacer image
spacer image
April is Donate Life month and you can be a hero. The University of Akron is currently competing against Kent State and 10 other schools to raise organ donation awareness.

Dr. Bill Hauser's senior Direct Interactive Marketing Practicum class is heading up the project for the University of Akron. They have already helped to raise awareness at the Kent/Akron basketball game, in the rec center and at other various events on campus. There will also be information available at EJ Thomas Hall during the month of April.

How do you get to be a hero? Simple, just go to http://www.doitnowohio.org/akron/ and sign up to be an organ donor. Once you do that, email cml22@uakron.edu to set up a time and place to pick up your free t-shirt (while supplies last).

Already a hero? Then email cml22@uakron.edu to arrange a time to pick up your free t-shirt (while supplies last) and commit to handing out 5 brochures and information sheets to help raise awareness. Also, commit to wearing your shirt a few times before the end of the semester.

If you have questions or simply want more information, go to http://www.doitnowohio.org/akron/.

Keep your eyes peeled for even more events and information about organ donation coming out in the months of April and May.

Be a hero today!

Student: If Option A to pay for school was mom and dad, and that didn't work out. And Option B was scholarships and that didn't work out. And Option C is to work hundreds of labor hours a week to pay for school and that is not working...Then look into Option D.

If joining a branch of the service to pay for school has crossed your mind then you need to call TODAY! The ONLY branch of service that has an office on campus is the Ohio National Guard. When you work part-time for us, the state of Ohio rewards you by paying for ALL your tuition and fees to The University of Akron!

We even pay you over $500 a month to help with books, cell phone and room and board. If working an average of 40 days a year right here in Akron area to have ALL your school paid for sounds interesting to you then call me soon. My office is at Schrank Hall South lower level. My office number is 330-972-7959. Call to get more info and see if you are qualified.

Ryan Green and Cameron Hood joined forces and traveled to Boston in 2003 with big dreams. In three years time, the acoustic guitar duo has graduated from performing subway stations to touring theaters with platinum-selling artist Jason Mraz; and gone from selling self-made CDs to recording their forthcoming record with Grammy-winning producer Ross Hogarth. Their performance landed them on the conference “Top-20 Hot List” according to Campus Acitivites Magazine, who would go on to call the duo “one of the hottest new bands in the college market today.”

Get one-to-one with “1-2-1 Peer Support”. All students are encouraged to attend an informational meeting Friday April 25th at 5PM in the Student Union room 308 for a prospective student organization dedicated to providing individual & group peer development, support, and consultation.

College is often referred to as the “best years of our lives”, however it can often involve great deals of stress and strain as we adapt to new environments, new challenges, and personal growth. The idea behind “1-2-1 Peer Support” is to create a student led, student run organization of peers helping each other deal with these challenges that come with college life. This could include a full range of issues such as test-anxiety, mentoring, financial, emotional, and relational to name only a few.

The goal is to create a flexible and dynamic network of students with various backgrounds, experiences, and knowledge so that we can help each other grow and develop according to our own desires and wishes. Free food and drinks will be provided followed by a brief informational presentation. If you are unable to attend but are still interested in the organization feel free to email Jesse L. The end of the semester is upon us, and that could only mean one thing if you're a big Nuance fan...The third anual A Cappella Nuance Concert is upon us. If you haven't heard of us before, check out our website http://www.uasingers.com or come check out our concert. There is no price for admission, and its a good time with great music and an entertaining atmosphere.

One point to make a note of is that the Concert is going to be the auditorium at Leigh Hall (Leigh Hall Rm 107) instead of the usual Guzzetta Hall. Its a bigger venue to fit more people, and we hope everyone who reads this can come check us out.

Consortium Allows Students to Learn About Entrepreneurship Aug. 10 - Aug. 15
12:00 pm - 3:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University of Akron’s Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and New Business Legal Clinic and six other entrepreneurship centers (Ashland, Baldwin Wallace, Case Western Reserve, Cleveland State, John Carroll, and Kent State Universities) have created a new Entrepreneurship Education Consortium (see http://www.eecneohio.com/acorn.php) in NEO to avoid brain drain and stimulate economic growth.

The consortium of universities, will select up to 35 students (from any discipline throughout their universities) to participate in an intensive week long entrepreneurship academy over the summer from August 10-15, 2008. The students will learn about various aspects of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship by attending two sessions a day.

The students will live in a dormitory for a week and will immerse themselves in topics and share information with each other. They will form teams and create a new product or service throughout the week and present it to a team of judges for prize money. This year’s event will take place at John Carroll University.

According to Dr. Todd Finkle, the Academic Director of the Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and Stephen Cook, Director of the New Business Legal Clinic, “This is a significant step forward for the region. We are not aware of another university or region that has done something of this magnitude. It shows collaboration and regionalism, which is what this region needs in order to survive. It is also a university-wide initiative that integrates students not only from all over our university, but with other schools to create synergies. As a group, we realized that we can accomplish much more together than individually. Our goal is to develop entrepreneurs, who will remain in the region after graduation. These students will form new enterprises, create new jobs for the labor force, and generate new economic activity. The economic future of our region will be shaped by students like these. The selected students will return to their home institutions, ready to start the academic year with new knowledge, new skills, and new attitudes about entrepreneurial opportunities here in Northeast Ohio. It won’t be all hard work. We will have a variety of activities lined up for the students in the evening such as going to an Indians game. There will be ample opportunities to network and meet a variety of prominent entrepreneurs and business people from the community. It will be an experience of a lifetime.”

To be eligible, students must be entering their junior or senior year in any major. Tuition, room, board, text books will be provided at no cost. For more information please contact Dr. Todd A. Finkle at finklet@uakron.edu or 330-972-8479.
