spacer image
Effective May 19, all patrons using the fitness floor & strength area equipment in the Rec Center and Ocasek Natatorium will be required to wear at minimum a short-sleeved t-shirt.

Tank tops, sleeveless shirts, sport bras (only), and cut-off shirts will not be permitted.

This policy is being implemented for the health and well-being of our members by greatly reducing the risk of skin-to-equipment disease transmission.

Fitness management staff will host discussion sessions for members who have questions on Wednesday, April 30th from 5 - 6 pm in Rec Center Room 246 and Tuesday, May 6th from 4 - 5 pm in the Rec Center fitness floor level downstairs lounge.

For more information about the new policy, visit our website at http://www.zipsrec.uakron.edu.

Activities galore at police showcase on Monday April 28
11:30 am - 1:30 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
You can ride a Segway and see the University's police dog in action at the University of Akron Police Department's showcase from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 28 in the Stile Athletics Field House. The event is free and open to faculty, staff and students.

Also at the showcase, you can:

  • meet UA's police officers,
  • put on goggles designed to simulate intoxication and (try to) ride an adult tricycle through an obstacle course,
  • learn defensive tactics that could turn away an attacker,
  • use Airsoft weapons, that shoot plastic BBs, in a practice target range,
  • learn about initiatives to strengthen campus safety, and
  • see police vehicles up close and from inside.

“This event should be a lot of fun, but we also want to get people to think more about safety,” said Sergeant Chad Cunningham, UAPD community policing officer. “I believe that people who attend the showcase will be surprised by the many ways our department works to improve safety and security to this campus.”

SIGN THE PETITION!

To All University of Akron Supporters,

Recently, The University of Akron American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student chapter teams placed 1st in the Steel Bridge competition and 2nd in the Concrete Canoe competition in the Ohio Valley Student Conference. These positions qualify both teams to attend the National Competitions.

However, due to a change of conference region, our eligibility to attend the National Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge Competitions has been denied by National ASCE, and our invitations withheld. This is currently under review by another committee for National ASCE. It is our position that we are eligible and deserving of invitations to both national competitions.

We are asking for support from our university to ensure that our student chapter is given the opportunities we have earned. We invite you to go to our website to view the history and details of this issue, as well as sign the petition that will be sent to the reviewing committee.

Our website, complete with the petition, is http://www.civil.uakron.edu/asce.

Private investigator, author and journalist Martin Yant will be joining the Sociology Club to share his experience on freeing the wrongfully convicted.

Mr. Yant is the author of five books, including the highly praised Presumed Guilty: When Innocent People Are Wrongly Convicted, and has been featured in a variety of magazines and television programs, including Time, The New York Times, Dateline, and CNN.

His investigations have helped free 12 wrongfully convicted persons, 2 of whom spent 26 years in jail and were sentenced to death.

One of Mr. Yant’s most recent successes was the nationally publicized case of convicted murderer and Akron native Clarence Elkins who was released from prison in December 2005 when DNA tests Mr. Yant initiated identified the true killer.

Consortium Allows Students to Learn About Entrepreneurship Aug. 10 - Aug. 15

The University of Akron’s Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and New Business Legal Clinic and six other entrepreneurship centers (Ashland, Baldwin Wallace, Case Western Reserve, Cleveland State, John Carroll, and Kent State Universities) have created a new Entrepreneurship Education Consortium (see http://www.eecneohio.com/acorn.php) ) in NEO to avoid brain drain and stimulate economic growth.

The consortium of universities, will select up to 35 students (from any discipline throughout their universities) to participate in an intensive week long entrepreneurship academy over the summer from August 10-15, 2008. The students will learn about various aspects of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship by attending two sessions a day.

The students will live in a dormitory for a week and will immerse themselves in topics and share information with each other. They will form teams and create a new product or service throughout the week and present it to a team of judges for prize money. This year’s event will take place at John Carroll University.

According to Dr. Todd Finkle, the Academic Director of the Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and Stephen Cook, Director of the New Business Legal Clinic, “This is a significant step forward for the region. We are not aware of another university or region that has done something of this magnitude. It shows collaboration and regionalism, which is what this region needs in order to survive. It is also a university-wide initiative that integrates students not only from all over our university, but with other schools to create synergies. As a group, we realized that we can accomplish much more together than individually. Our goal is to develop entrepreneurs, who will remain in the region after graduation. These students will form new enterprises, create new jobs for the labor force, and generate new economic activity. The economic future of our region will be shaped by students like these. The selected students will return to their home institutions, ready to start the academic year with new knowledge, new skills, and new attitudes about entrepreneurial opportunities here in Northeast Ohio. It won’t be all hard work. We will have a variety of activities lined up for the students in the evening such as going to an Indians game. There will be ample opportunities to network and meet a variety of prominent entrepreneurs and business people from the community. It will be an experience of a lifetime.”

To be eligible, students must be entering their junior or senior year in any major. Tuition, room, board, text books will be provided at no cost. For more information please contact Dr. Todd A. Finkle at finklet@uakron.eduor 330-972-8479.
