Residence Hall Student Move-Out May 4 - May 9
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Resident students will be moving out from May 4 through May 9. We encourage all students moving during final exams to plan ahead.

To make your move easier, North Quad residents (Bulger, Honors/Orr, Ritchie, Sisler-McFawn and Spanton) are encouraged to use the North Quad Parking Deck (Lot #26). South Quad students are encouraged to use lots adjacent to their buildings. Exchange Street residents are encouraged to use the metered spaces by Gallucci or Exchange. Quaker Square residents are encouraged to use Lot #70 at Quaker Square. There will be carts available for your use at each Service Desk for loading and unloading.

For the safety of personal belongings, students are encouraged not to leave their vehicles unattended or rooms unlocked while loading. Loading Passes are available in the Office of Residence Life and Housing at Ritchie Hall. However, these passes are not valid in ADA parking spaces or fire lanes. Unattended vehicles may be ticketed.

Non-residents, faculty and staff should be aware there will be increased vehicular and pedestrian traffic in residential areas during this time.

A few safety tips to follow while moving out for the summer
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
With the spring semester coming to a close, many students will be moving out of either the residence halls or off campus housing and traveling back home for the summer. Below are some safety tips that you should follow while preparing for your departure.
  1. Wherever you are, stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings. Don't daydream.
  2. Never leave your personal property unattended even if you're going to be gone for just a minute. While moving in/out of your apartment/home/residence halls, it is common practice for students to park close to the building and start moving, leaving their cars unlocked and unattended. This is inviting your belongings, including your car, to be stolen.
  3. Always lock your car and your room. Students will commonly leave their door unlocked if they are expecting a visitor or if they are going to be away for just a minute. Many thefts occur when the student is away from their room for just a few minutes.
  4. Never give your keys or your ZipCard to anyone, even your best friend. With your room/house/apartment keys, he or she can enter at will. Anyone who has your ZipCard can enter your residential building or use your meal-plan funds.
  5. Familiarize yourself with the location of emergency telephones, both indoor and outdoor.
  6. Pack inside and load your vehicle right before you plan to leave.
  7. Stick to well-lit and busy areas. Stay on the part of the sidewalk that is farthest away from shrubs, dark doorways and alleys where people can hide.
  8. Avoid displaying large amounts of cash or other tempting targets such as jewelry or expensive clothing.
  9. Place valuables left in your car under your seat, in your trunk, or somewhere else out of sight. Leaving CDs or a portable CD player on your seat invites someone to break a window from your car and grab them.
Enjoy a safe summer!

2. The Information Center keeps the 2nd form of photo ID (not your Zipcard)
3. Laptops are checked out for 2 hour increments
4. Laptops must remain in the Student Union

Good Luck on Finals!

UA wants to know what you think about the issue of smoking on campus. Let us know by completing this short online survey.

The survey asks for your opinion about the University's current smoking policies and the University's enforcement of those policies, among other questions. The survey will be available until May 9.

A campus wellness committee will use the results to form recommendations that will go to the University administration in June.

Effective May 19, 2008, all patrons using the fitness floor & strength area equipment in the SRWC and ONAT will be required to wear at minimum a short-sleeved t-shirt. Tank tops, sleeveless shirts, sport bras (only), and cut-off shirts will not be permitted. This policy is being implemented for the health and well-being of our members by greatly reducing the risk of skin-to-equipment disease transmission. Fitness management staff will host a discussion session for members who have questions on Tuesday, May 6th from 4 - 5 pm in the SRWC fitness floor level downstairs lounge.

Consortium Allows Students to Learn About Entrepreneurship Aug. 10 - Aug. 15

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
The University of Akron’s Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and New Business Legal Clinic and six other entrepreneurship centers (Ashland, Baldwin Wallace, Case Western Reserve, Cleveland State, John Carroll, and Kent State Universities) have created a new Entrepreneurship Education Consortium (see http://www.eecneohio.com/acorn.php) in NEO to avoid brain drain and stimulate economic growth.

The consortium of universities, will select up to 35 students (from any discipline throughout their universities) to participate in an intensive week long entrepreneurship academy over the summer from August 10-15, 2008. The students will learn about various aspects of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship by attending two sessions a day.

The students will live in a dormitory for a week and will immerse themselves in topics and share information with each other. They will form teams and create a new product or service throughout the week and present it to a team of judges for prize money. This year’s event will take place at John Carroll University.

According to Dr. Todd Finkle, the Academic Director of the Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies and Stephen Cook, Director of the New Business Legal Clinic, “This is a significant step forward for the region. We are not aware of another university or region that has done something of this magnitude. It shows collaboration and regionalism, which is what this region needs in order to survive. It is also a university-wide initiative that integrates students not only from all over our university, but with other schools to create synergies. As a group, we realized that we can accomplish much more together than individually. Our goal is to develop entrepreneurs, who will remain in the region after graduation. These students will form new enterprises, create new jobs for the labor force, and generate new economic activity. The economic future of our region will be shaped by students like these. The selected students will return to their home institutions, ready to start the academic year with new knowledge, new skills, and new attitudes about entrepreneurial opportunities here in Northeast Ohio. It won’t be all hard work. We will have a variety of activities lined up for the students in the evening such as going to an Indians game. There will be ample opportunities to network and meet a variety of prominent entrepreneurs and business people from the community. It will be an experience of a lifetime.”

To be eligible, students must be entering their junior or senior year in any major. Tuition, room, board, text books will be provided at no cost. For more information please contact Dr. Todd A. Finkle at finklet@uakron.eduor 330-972-8479.
