For fall, UA revises terms for payment-plan option

We have a payment-plan option available to help those students who cannot pay the full charges for tuition, on-campus housing and/or the meal plan at the start of the semester. Under the payment plan, students agree to pay tuition and fees in installments over the semester. A down payment is required to start.

Changes to payment plan

For the Fall 2008 term, we are making changes to the payment-plan requirements.

The amount of the down payment will change to $1,000 for full-time students (those who carry 12 or more credit hours in a given semester). It will change to $500 for part-time students (those who carry fewer than 12 hours in a given semester). 

The number of installments permitted in the fall and spring semesters will change from four to three.

Reasons for the change

There are three main reasons for the revisions.

  1. We believe that the revised down-payment requirements will reduce the number of nonpayments. We want to minimize nonpayments because they hurt students and the University in the short and long terms.  Students who find that they cannot pay run the risk of ruining their credit rating for years to come. Nonpayments also affect students by:
      • reducing the funds available for student instruction and services, and
      • increasing the University’s long-term overhead costs, which affect future pricing decisions.
  2. We will reduce the number of installments permitted in the fall and spring terms to eliminate confusion that comes when due dates overlap. For instance, the overlap occurs in December, when the last payment for fall and the first payment for spring are due.
  3. The changes will bring us more in line with the practices of the other state universities. Even with the change, other state universities will require a larger down payment than UA will. (Some universities, including one nearby, require a down payment of 25 percent to 34 percent of the total owed. Others do not allow anticipated financial aid to be used as a down payment source.)

Our commitment

We understand that tuition and fees can pose a financial burden on students and families. We will continue to purposefully and thoughtfully reduce costs where we can without compromising academic integrity. We also have established programs — such as the payment-plan option and the ability to apply anticipated financial aid to the down payment — to help ease the financial burden on you.

The University of Akron's Zipmail is a compilation of University announcements for University students, sent each Friday unless circumstances require otherwise. The deadline for submissions to be considered by the University is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Zipmail is a University of Akron communication vehicle established for the benefit of The University of Akron to communicate with its students. Items will be accepted for publication only when the University is directly involved in the activity through participation, sponsorship, or partnership with one of its recognized organizations, colleges or departments. The University reserves the right to edit or to refuse to run any submission for any reason. Zipmail is not, nor is it intended to be, a public forum or a limited public forum. Questions about the implementation of this policy may be directed to zipmail@uakron.edu.

Items to be considered for inclusion in Zipmail should be sent through the Zipmail Event Submission Form. Due to the volume of submissions received, items will not run more than one time.
