Campus Loop Shuttle Update

The Campus Loop Shuttle's hours of operation have been changed for all routes for the Spring 2004 semester. The new hours of operation will be:

Polsky Route - 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday
8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., Friday

Gallucci Route - 8:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday
8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., Friday

North Route- 3:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday

Free Metro Pass Program

The University of Akron's Metro Pass Program enables students and employees to ride on Metro buses free of charge by displaying a Zipcard. This program will continue throughout the Spring 2004 semester. It is not in effect during the summer and is currently being reevaluated for the Fall 2004 semester.

Summer Graduation Application Deadline

All students planning to graduate at the end of the Summer 2004 semester are reminded that the deadline to apply for graduation is Monday, February 16. Graduation Application Forms can be obtained on the University Registrar’s website at http://www.uakron.edu/registrar/grad.html or in the Student & Administrative Services Building lobby.

Late applicants will be assessed a $100 late fee and must present a memo of late permission rationale from their dean. Any questions regarding the graduation application process may be directed to the Commencement Office at commencement@uakron.edu or (330) 972-8300.

Swimming Lessons Jan. 13

The Ocasek Natatorium will offer American Red Cross swimming lessons for ages six months to adult during the Spring 2004 semester. Lessons will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, starting January 13, and on Saturdays, beginning February 21. Also available are American Red Cross re-certification challenge classes in Lifeguarding, CPR-PR and STSC.

Registrations are required and class space is limited, so early sign-ups are suggested. Registration forms are available at the Ocasek Natatorium's front desk or at http://www.uakron.edu/studentaff/onat/swimlessons/php.

Raise Your Voice Coalition is a campus wide initiative giving students the opportunity to become involved with the democratic process, specifically the 2004 election. All students are invited to attend this meeting on Tuesday, January 13, at 5:00 p.m. in the Student Union, Ballroom C.

During this meeting, three chairpersons will be elected to lead committees that will focus on the 2004 campaign issues, promotion, candidate information and voter registration.

This City Reads! Kickoff

The City of Akron will attempt to become the Reading Capital of the World by engaging as many people as possible in reading from 11:00-11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 14. The current world record of 7,500 people reading at one time belongs to the town of Tifton, Georgia.

All members of The University of Akron community can help make a significant contribution towards this goal by pledging to read. Interested parties may participate in any form of reading--in groups or individually, aloud or silently, at any place--during this time.

Pledge cards will be available on campus at the bookstore, library and Robertson Dining Hall or electronically at http://www.thiscityreads.org.

MTV's "Road Rules" Comes to Rhodes Arena Jan. 14

Chris and Christena, members of the "Road Rules: Season 12 South Pacific" cast, will be making a special appearance at the men's basketball game against Bowling Green on Wednesday, January 14.

Tip-off time is scheduled at 7:00 p.m. and the game is being televised on Time Warner cable.

The cast members will be available beginning at 5:45 p.m. for autographs and photos. They will also be providing the half time entertainment with MTV's 2004 Shootout Tour contests.

An Evening for Lily Jan. 14

The Latter-Day Saint Student Association is inviting all members of The University of Akron community to a benefit concert for a little girl from China on Wednesday, January 14, from 7:00-10:00 p.m. at the Stow Baseball Hall.

The concert will feature Nashville recording artist, Jim Champman, songwriter, Jim Funk, and live music by The Ozone. There will also be an auction and a special video presentation, as well as the premiere of a brand new song, "Does Anyone Hear Her Cry."

This is a special concert to raise money needed to cover the much needed expense of bringing Lily Driggs home. The cost is $25 at the door and $20 in advance.

"42nd Street" Comes to E.J. Jan. 20 - Jan. 25

A Broadway legend that defined musical comedy with its “star-is-born” scenario, "42nd Street" is back, in a toe-tapping, back-flipping production that earned the 2001 Tony Award for Best Musical Revival and the 2001 Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award in the same category.

Now on tour, "42nd Street" is coming to The University of Akron's E.J. Thomas Hall for a six-day, eight-performance run from Tuesday, January 20 through Sunday, January 25. Featuring such Broadway favorites as: “We’re in the Money,” “You’re Getting to Be a Habit With Me,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “I Only Have Eyes For You” and the spectacular title number danced down a flight of steps, "42nd Street" chronicles Peggy Sawyer's rise from chorine to Broadway star.
