In spring 2008, we asked for your opinion about smoking on campus. A survey was conducted to assess smoking activity on campus, attitudes toward current smoking policies on campus, and to gauge support or opposition for a strictly smoke-free campus policy. The survey received over 3,000 responses. Click here to review a summary of the survey results. A campus wellness committee will use the survey results – as well additional research and input - to form recommendations that will go to the University administration.

Social Change through Empowerment and Simple Technology: Experiences from Rural Haiti Sept. 25

Sarah Brownell and Kevin Foos
Cofounders of SOIL (Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods)

Can you hear Haiti? Suffering from hundreds of years of slavery, dictatorships, political turmoil, economic exploitation, and human rights violations, Haiti has long been the United States poorest neighbor. The Haitian people, however, have an unquenchable desire for freedom, a faith in democracy such that they would walk an entire day and stand in line another day just to participate in elections, and a fascinating resilience. Whenever there is a small space made for acceptance in the climate of repression, grassroots groups spring forth. No matter which party is in power, poverty is still the main, ever present human rights violation in Haiti. Many people do not have access to clean water, enough food, a place to go to the bathroom, a grade school education, a job, or health care.

But through community empowerment and education projects, international exchange, and simple technologies, grassroots organizations in northern Haiti are exploring alternatives that protect both human health and the environment. Sarah Brownell and Kevin Foos will discuss how simple technology centers give local people the choice over which life saving technologies are best for their community, how participatory education programs allow folks trained in universities and those trained on the land to exchange knowledge and ideas, and how, through collaboration with women’s groups, peasant organizations, and youth groups, simple technologies that protect health and the environment can find their way to the poorest slums and most remote villages.

Dear University of Akron Student Organizations,

Alpha Gamma Delta will be holding their annual Alpha Gam Lip Jam event on Friday October 3, 2008 at the Daum Theater on The University of Akron's Campus. "Lip Jam" is a friendly song and dance competition with all proceeds going towards Juvenile Diabetes. This year's theme will be "Alpha Gam Goes Country, Down On The Farm!" All acts should be performing to any variation of country music, throughout the years. For the first time, we are extending invitations to campus organizations. We encourage your participation, as it will make this year's event the most successful one to date!

If you are interested, please contact Alpha Gamma Delta President, Tess Goodrow, at tlg21@uakron.edu and she will get you in contact with our Philanthropy Coordinator. Our Philanthropy Coordinator will get you a registration packet, which includes registration guidelines, deadlines, and a list of suggested songs. Upon registering, you will be given a Lip Jam Coach, which is a member of Alpha Gamma Delta who will help you in anyway you need. (With your banner, choreographing, need to know information, and making you treats to get you excited for the event!)

Our chapter looks forward to your participation in our philanthropic lip synching event!

(Do not hesitate to contact Tess Goodrow with questions! Thank you!)

spacer image
How would you rate your dining etiquette skills? Do you think you have what it takes to make a good first impression on a prospective employer? There is no better, or possibly worse, place to make a lasting impression than at the dinner table. Most of us can get through a meal with a friend without even thinking twice about it, but once you’re across the table from a potential employer, the pressure and competition is on.

The Center for Career Management is offering an interactive “crash course,” which will highlight the basic elements of etiquette during a full-course meal, and tips on how to interact with participants in business and social settings. This event will be facilitated by a consultant specializing in etiquette and interviewing, while you enjoy a lunch of soup, salad, entrée, and dessert. Reservations for this event must be made before Monday, October 6th, 5:00 pm. Seating is limited*.

Contact the Center for Career Management for more information and reservation details at 330-972-7747 or uaccm@uakron.edu. A $20 deposit (cash or Zip Card meal plan) is required when you register and will be refunded after you attend the event. Those who reserve a meal, but do not attend, will forfeit their cash deposit.

*Please note: this event is open to new participants only. Those that have attended an etiquette lunch in the past may contact the Center for Career Management to discuss other concerns and questions.
