Police: Keep Your Bookbags In Sight
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Recently, the UA Police Department has received reports about unattended bookbags being taken. Some of these incidents have occurred at Robertson Dining Hall and at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

As University police take action to further secure these areas, they ask that students exercise caution when leaving or using anything of value in a public area.

Often, thefts can be prevented by using a lock and a locker. Robertson Café has many free lockers by its entrance for student to use. These lockers require a quarter to open, then will return the quarter when you return the key.

The Recreation and Wellness Center also has locks available for use on its lockers.

If taking a break from studying in the library it is recommended that you bring your belongings with you or ask someone nearby to watch them, even if you will be returning momentarily. Is not taking these extra steps worth losing your coursework or identity over?

Also, police recommend that students do not leave valuables in visible areas of their cars and lock their doors. Attempting to hide CDs, electronics and other valuables in book bags in a vehicle is equally as risky, as bags tend to look “interesting” to those looking to steal.

If you witness something that doesn’t look right, do not hesitate to call the University’s 24-hour police department at 330-972-2911, or ext. 2911 from a campus phone.

National Guard service can help pay college bills Sept. 26
9:00 am - 5:00 pm

spacer image
spacer image
University of Akron students:

If you are having a hard time paying for this semester OR are already seeing that you will not have the funds next semester then please at least find out if you are qualified for the easiest scholarship available to you. Twenty two years ago I was in the same situation... No money to pay for school and that meant to drop out.

But a few months after dropping out a friend told me about the OHIO National Guard. At the time I had no interest in joining the service, but when I realized that the National Guard helps out right here in the community and the state of Ohio I looked into it even more. And then when I found out that the State of Ohio will reward me with a 100% tuition and fee scholarship to The University of Akron just for working part-time (one week-end a month of fun work) I joined and see it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It helped me get my degree here (Class of 1989!) I received job skill training and great pay and benefits.

My office is located right here on campus at Schrank Hall South lower level. I am on campus because this program helps students NOT to drop out or get in HUGE financial debt with loans. Just find out if you qualify! If you do at least you'll know you have something to fall back on.

Joining the Ohio National Guard wasn't my first choice either, to pay for school. But it was better than dropping out with no college education at all, which is a MUST to succeed! Call my office and ask for James or Jay at 330-972-7959. Call today! I will be able to pay for Spring semester (all $4800+!) if you call soon. Or you can email me at jyoungd@uakron.edu

Get 1-2-1 with peers helping peers, a new Student organization! Sept. 29

spacer image
Get one-to-one with “1-2-1 Peer Support”. All students are encouraged to attend an informational meeting Monday September 29th, 3-4 PM in the Student Union room 308 for a prospective student organization dedicated to providing individual & group peer development, support, and consultation. College is often referred to as the “best years of our lives”, however it can often involve great deals of stress and strain as we adapt to new environments, new challenges, and personal growth. The idea behind “1-2-1 Peer Support” is to create a student led, student run organization of peers helping each other deal with these challenges that come with college life. This could include a full range of issues such as test-anxiety, mentoring, financial, emotional, and relational to name only a few. The goal is to create a flexible and dynamic network of students with various backgrounds, experiences, and knowledge so that we can help each other grow and develop according to our own desires and wishes. If you are unable to attend but are still interested in the organization feel free to email Jesse L. Woodard jwoodard@neo.rr.com

Freud's "Interpretation of Dreams" Sept. 30
5:00 pm - 6:30 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Have you ever wondered what our dreams mean? Are they prophetic like the ancients believed or are they really just reactions to the physical world? Can we honestly ever figure out the true causes and meanings behind our dreams? The “Interpretation of Dreams” from Sigmund Freud attempts to answer some of these questions that have puzzled many psychologists and philosophers. This will be a discussion of such inquiries into our psychical tendencies when it comes to our dreams. There may not be many answers that suit our liking, but it will at least give some insight into why some things occur in our dreams that seemingly have no correlation to the outside world. Perhaps through this discussion we can achieve a middle ground of interpretation.

We will be discussing all of these questions at the next Philosophy Club meeting on September 30th at 5:00 PM in the Student Union room 316.

The Center for Career Management along with the Buchtel College of Arts & Science, the College of Business Administration, College of Engineering, and Summit College will be holding the 2nd Annual Technology Forum. ALL current students and alumni in the area of Technology are welcomed to attend. This is a great opportunity for students to not only chat with employers from the Technology field, but also a chance to learn more about possible career paths.

The forum will consist of two sessions: Session One: 5:30 PM – 6:45 PM will consist of a student panel. These individuals will discuss and share their experiences as employment seekers, co-op/interns, and full time employees. Session Two: 6:45 PM – 8:00 PM will entail a meet and greet session where students and employers will be able to network with one another.

The forum will be held at the UA Student Union on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 from
5:30 PM – 8:00 PM. Interested students need to register by Friday, October 3, 2008 to the Center for Career Management at (330) 972-7747.
