UA’s Women in Higher Education will kick off their spring semester brown bag luncheons with “Exploding the Estrogen Myth: The Legacy of DES” on Thursday, January 29, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in Zook Hall, Room 34.

DES, or diethylstilbestrol, is a synthetic estrogen that was prescribed to women from the 40’s to the 70’s in the mistaken belief that it prevented miscarriage. This occurred despite increasing research evidence that it was not effective and in fact dangerous. It has since been connected to a number of medical and reproductive problems in the women that took it as well as their children and grandchildren. The drug has also been used—legally and illegally—as a supplement to cattle feed.

Presenters will include: Litsa Varonis, Multimedia Specialist in Design and Development Services; Jana Russ, Assistant Lecturer in History and English; and Jennifer Fenderbosch, a marketing executive. All three are DES daughters.
