Big Halloween plans this weekend?
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Everyone knows that it's Halloween weekend. Many of us will use the occasion to dress up and act like someone else – not unlike some of the politicians on TV and radio these days.

We want you to have fun this weekend. Be safe. Be smart. And keep these tips in mind:

  • When you head out to that party on Halloween, keep in mind that your costume cannot mask unlawful behavior. Your conduct on and off campus can be referred to UA’s Student Judicial Affairs.
  • Students share the neighborhoods surrounding campus with families – some have small children and pets that will be out. Make sure to drive slowly, carefully and soberly. Hitting someone would haunt your driving record for life.
  • Don’t consume any drinks left unattended at a party and make sure to inspect anything accepted from someone you don’t know. Failure to do so may leave your stomach a boiling pot of witches’ brew.
  • Walk in groups. While the neighborhoods aren’t haunted, you’re always safer in numbers.

If you go to a party:

  • If you are of age to consume, drink responsibly and make arrangements for a designated driver or place to stay.
  • Alcohol can lower inhibitions and cause one to do things they wouldn’t consider under normal circumstances. Keep this in mind before you try anything different. Is a few minutes of fun worth having to explain testing positive for drugs or STDs later on?
  • If you are asked to leave, leave – it’s not worth getting into a fight over.
  • If a police officer asks you to do something, do as he or she says. Defying the request can have consequences, including a referral to Judicial Affairs.

If you are hosting a party:

  • Remember Akron has a noise ordinance – if members of your party or your music can be heard from 80 feet away or more, you’re in violation.
  • Check IDs of anyone drinking either at the door or where your beverages are located – it’s on you if anything were to happen and an underage drinker were discovered.
  • If someone is asked to leave and they don’t cooperate, they are trespassing. If you feel intimidated by an unwanted guest, call the police at 9-1-1 or 330-972-2911.

UA and its police department care about your safety. Have fun this weekend.

ua police officersThe University of Akron Police Department has strengthened its ranks though the hiring of eight new police officers for main campus and Wayne College.

The officers were officially sworn in at a special ceremony Tuesday at the Quaker Station at the Quaker Square Inn at The University of Akron.

"The addition of these officers is significant due to their years of excellent work in other departments and law enforcement agencies," says Paul Callahan, chief of The University of Akron Police Department. "But there are many areas of law enforcement that are unique to campus law enforcement. All of the new officers are now undergoing an intensive acclimation period called the Field Training Officer program. Read more.

Preview of 2 X-BOX games and
Prescreening of “Role Models”
Thursday November 6th, 2008
8:00pm
Student Union Theatre

Synopsis of the movie: Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott star in Role Models as Danny and Wheeler, two salesmen who trash a company truck on an energy drink-fueled bender. Upon their arrest, the court gives them a choice: do hard time or spend 150 hours with a mentorship program. After one day with the kids, however, jail doesn't look half bad. Once the center's ex-con director (Jane Lynch) gives them an ultimatum, Danny and Wheeler are forced to tailor their brand of immature wisdom to their charges, Augie and Ronnie. And if they can just make it through probation without getting thrown in jail, the world's worst role models will prove that, sometimes, it takes a village idiot to raise a child.

Come on out for a night of prescreenings and previews at the student union theatre! The xbox preview and prescreening will start at 8 so be sure to get there early so you’re guaranteed a seat. Admission is free with you zip card and guests may attend for just $1.

A Conversation with Chuck Underwood - "Generational Differences: The Millennial Generation" Nov. 11

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
If you were born after 1982, you are part of the Millennial Generation. You grew up with computers, cell phones, and CD players. Have you ever considered that your professors grew up in a different generation, and that their life experiences differed greeted from yours? Most professors were born before the invention of the Internet and DVD players, which is hard to imagine. Most corporate work environments rarely change with the times. Your life experiences even impact the way you learn, how you relate to the way your professors teach, and how easily you assimilate to the job environment.

Chuck Underwood, a generational researcher, is coming to The University of Akron to discuss generational differences. Mr. Underwood is the founder and president of The Generational Imperative, Inc., a research-driven generational business consultancy that assists corporations such as Procter & Gamble and Coca Cola.
