Online services in ZipLine will be limited Nov. 26 to Dec. 8
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Some of the online services you use here at the University will be unavailable Wednesday, Nov. 26 until Monday, Dec. 8, because UA will be installing a major software upgrade.

Here’s how you will be affected during that period:

• ZipLine will be available, but only in a read-only mode. You won’t be able to conduct any business in ZipLine during that period. You’ll be able to view your records and accounts, but that information will not be updated until Dec. 8. (You should process all transactions prior to Nov. 26 if you wish them to appear in the snapshot available for view during the down time.)

• Several applications will still be available during this time, including:
• Springboard will be available, as will e-mail.
• Student email – webmail
• Faculty / Staff email - Exchange

• You’ll be able to make payments at the cashier windows in Simmons Hall, but the transactions will not be updated in ZipLine until Dec. 8.

• No refunds checks will be generated during the downtime. Refunds will be retroactively calculated when the system is brought back up based on the date the paperwork was submitted at the Student Services Center or Registration Office in Simmons Hall.

• Financial Aid refund checks that would normally be generated between Nov. 26 and Dec. 8 will be generated and mailed beginning Dec. 8.

• Registration changes and posting of other charges that may impact fees will not be updated on the student account during the down time. Once ZipLine is operating again on Dec. 8, the revised information will be posted.

• Other transactions (housing charges, meal plans, transportation fees/waivers, etc.) will be held and posted/updated on Dec. 8 or as soon as the system is available.

• Once the system is available, as a precaution for the first week (Dec. 8 – 12), you should keep track of all your online transactions. So, for example, if you make a payment, simply keep a record of it.

Once the upgrade is completed, you will discover that ZipLine has more features and improved navigation. Learn more about this project at http://www.uakron.edu/its/PSv9_Migration/index.php.

Archaeological Institute of America Lecture Nov. 11

spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Please join us on Tuesday, November 11th for the Archaeological Institute of American Lecture by

Prof. Marcello Barbanera on ‘The Metamorphosis of Ruins for Cultural Identity’.

The lecture will take place at 6:15 pm in Folk Hall (Myers School of Art on Exchange). [Note a slight time change.] A reception will be held at 5:30.

A lecture summary:

Ruins are emblematic of transience and yet also of persistence over time. Both dimensions are crucial to understand the meaning of ruins, which are comprehensible as a historical phenomenon only from a cultural perspective. This presentation will elaborate on how a ruin can be interpreted as an object that speaks to us of the past. Ruins may seen today a matter mostly for archaeology specialists but they had interpast much a wider relevance due to their semantic ambiguity, on one hand as metaphors for roman poets of the vicissitudes of the fate, symbol of the decay of a universe without God for Christians, yet on the other hand as a powerful allegory of rebirth of the ancient culture in the Renaissance and beyond.

This talk explores the perception of the ruin from the perspective of ancient Greek and Roman culture down to present thought, distinguishing the appreciation for ruins among early Humanists from that of the 18th century philosopher Diderot or Marcel Proust in the 20th. I will consider also how one treats or should treat ruins, cares for them, studies them, and how powerful their meaning has been over the centuries.

CAMPUS BLOOD DRIVE: Give Blood- The Gift of Life !! Nov. 17 - Nov. 19
Time: n/a
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image

We all expect blood to be there for us, but barely a fraction of those who can give do. Yet sooner or later, virtually all of us will face a time of great vulnerability in which we will need blood. And that time is all too often unexpected.

The American Red Cross will be hosting a blood drive here on campus. The donating process takes about 10 minutes and is a quick and easy way to make a huge difference in someone's life. The drive will be held at the Recreation and Wellness center on the second floor. The dates and times of the drive are listed below.

Monday November 17th - 11AM-5PM
Tuesday November 18th - 10AM-4PM
Wednesday November 19th - 9AM-3PM

Appointments reduce donors' waiting time but walk-ins are welcome! If you would like to sign up for the blood drive ahead of time please e-mail akb26@uakron.edu

Also, if anyone would also like to help out at the blood drive at the registration table, or the refreshments area, the help would be greatly appreciated.

Some Reminders to Donors Before Giving Blood:

1) Bring a photo ID or Red Cross Donor's card
2) Eat a substantial breakfast or lunch before giving blood, this allows the body to maintain a stable blood sugar level
3) Drink lots of water
4) Avoid caffeine to maintain a balanced iron level

Refreshments will be provided to donors after giving blood.

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to donate blood or help out at the drive please contact American Red Cross Representative: Arah Bredenbeck

Greetings,

Sorry about the CAPS lock- it seems to get more attention.

If you wish to participate in all the fun at Brandywine this winter- your deadline is fast approaching... actually it's not really "approaching" any faster, that is- time wasn't passing slower before; it's just closer to the date now. But then again, I guess that depends on how fast you are traveling compared to the speed of light.

If you want your 3 free passes to use whenever for whomever, the deadline is November 21; if you do not wish to get the free passes (and by that I mean you forget to turn in the application before Nov 21) your last chance for the program is December 10.

Our next meeting is December 1.

Summary:
Brandywine with 3 free passes deadline: Nov 21
Next meeting: Dec 1
Brandywine dead-deadline: Dec 10
