Hey Akron!!

Are you interested in community service and meeting new people? Are you a former Key Club member looking to continue in the Kiwanis family?

If so, you should check out Akron's Circle K club!

Our meetings are Tuesdays at 7:30 in room 314 of the student union, but if you're looking to get involved, this weekend would be a great time to start! On Saturday, we'll be holding our 3rd annual 24 Hours of Service event. Activities for the day will include:

* Transportation for Make a Difference Day – Every year, our club helps ensure that participants in Make a Difference Day get to their service sites safely and quickly.
* Trick or Treat for UNICEF – Last year, we raised $271 to help stop childhood disease all around the world. This year, we're hoping to exceed that, and have a ton of fun doing it!
* Overnight Projects – During the night, we'll be working on decorations for our Harry Potter themed Christmas tree to benefit the Akron Children's Hospital tree auction. We'll also be wrapping shoeboxes full of gifts for Operation Christmas Child, to provide Christmas gifts for impoverished children around the world.

As you can tell from just this one project, Circle K is all about helping our campus and our community, and we'd love to have you join us!

For more information about Circle K or 24 Hours of Service, you can contact president Patsy Sullivan at pcs9@uakron.edu.

Free—Sponsored by ZPN and RHPB

As a former Division 1 football star, Travis Watkins doesn’t seem to fit the image of a Spoken Word Poet. Yet, as the winner of the coveted National College Language Association Award for Poetry and with a Top 8 National Slam Poetry Ranking, it’s clear that Travis isn’t concerned with images. Upon graduating from the University of Kansas, Travis taught for two years and began his rise in the world of contemporary Slam Poetry. He now ranks as one of the top young poetic talents in the nation and is touring the globe as a performance poet.

Colin Gilbert, a native east Texan, began writing and performing his poetry in 2005 and immediately received local recognition. His poetry covers a number of topics ranging from family values to social commentary and prejudice. He currently holds every performance poetry title in Dallas, including all three Head-to-Head Haiku Death Championships in 2006.

Dancers and drummers will fill the stage of Daum Theatre at The University of Akron for “Axé!,” a high-energy performance celebrating Afro-Brazilian music, movements, and culture on Friday, Oct. 31, at 8 p.m.

Free and open to the public, the performance will feature Brazilian guest artists Marcus Santos and Ana Carla Laidley with the UA Percussion Ensemble and 17 students from the UA Dance Program. Daum Theatre is in Kolbe Hall, 328 Buchtel Common on the UA campus.

Among the highlights will be Samba Axé, a highly choreographed and richly visual dance style that started in 1992 during Brazil’s Carnaval season in Bahia.

The Oct. 31 performance is the finale of a five-day campus workshop taught by Santos and Laidley. Percussionist Santos is the co-founder and artistic director of AfroBrazil.org, an organization devoted to promoting and teaching Afro-Brazilian music and culture in the United States. Laidley teaches traditional and Samba dances and has paraded for more than 30 years in Brazil’s Carnaval with one of the most traditional Samba Schools, Estacao Primeira de Mangueria.

Santos, Laidley, and several UA dancers and percussionists will also perform at The Shaker Square Cinema on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m. More information about that event is at www.sergioscleveland.com.

Organizers of the workshop and performances include UA percussion faculty member Larry Snider, graduate student Amy Cadle, who lived in Brazil and studied music there, dance faculty member Nick Carlisle, and Neil Sapienza, director of the UA School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration.
