Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Jan. 19
9:30 am - 2:00 pm
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
In order to celebrate the life and ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., The University of Akron will be sending volunteers out into the community to live out one of Dr. King's most cherished principles: SERVICE. Dr. King believed that, "Everybody can be great because everybody can serve." Here at the University of Akron we believe that as well and are constantly looking for and offering such opportunities to our students and community. In fact, President-Elect Barack Obama and Vice President-Elect Joe Biden and their families will be participating in service on that day as well and are encouraging all to serve with them.

Volunteers will meet in Schrank Hall South 145 at 9:30 am to register. Volunteers will then be sent via a Roo Express to multiple agencies/organizations. Projects include: cleaning, sorting, organizing at the Haven of Rest, collecting canned goods for the Haven of Rest, organizing, painting, and installing grip bars at Rebuilding Together, doing crafts and activities with children at Hattie Larlham, and more!

Volunteers are also encouraged to bring a canned fruit or vegetable to donate to the Haven of Rest.

There will be a FREE pizza lunch provided for all the volunteers following their service!

Volunteers can register by filling out the brochures at the Info Desk in the Student Union or by clicking on the link below!

Last year The University of Akron sent 55 students, faculty, and staff to Houma, LA to assist in the efforts of rebuilding the Gulf Coast. Volunteers replaced ceilings, completed interior remodeling, painted the exteriors of houses, installed siding, as well as various other tasks. Volunteers also had fun by going on a swamp tour and a tour of New Orleans.

This year The University of Akron will send students, faculty, and staff to New Orleans to continue this rebuilding effort. A trip of this magnitude comes with a cost and in order to defray the cost for our volunteers we are hosting the 4th Annual Hearts for Humanity, a dinner, dance, and auction fund raising event. There will be delicious food, fun dancing-including the option of dancing with Zippy, and an exciting auction with great prizes. The cost for students is $20/person, which can be paid online or with their Zip Card at Rob's. All other tickets are $25/person. Don't miss this great evening of fun and an opportunity to support our volunteers and the people of New Orleans.
