E-mail message from IRS is frauduent
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
Students are being urged to ignore and delete the following fraudulent message, which was sent recently to some university e-mail accounts. The message, purportedly from the Internal Revenue Service, asks recipients to submit sensitive personal information.

Information Technology Services is taking steps to block future messages of this nature.

Learn how to recognize fraudulent “phishing” e-mail messages.

Here is the bogus message that is appearing in mailboxes:

From: Internal Revenue Service
Date: Tue, 20 Jan 2009 13:59:32 -0500
Subject: Please submit your Stimulus Payment form
Attachment: Stimulus.Form.pdf.

After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible to receive a Stimulus Payment. Please submit the Stimulus Payment Online Form in order to process it.

A Stimulus Payment can be delayed for a variety of reasons. For example submitting invalid records or applying after the deadline.

To submit your Stimulus Payment form, please download the document attached to your email.

Note: If filing or preparation fees were deducted from your 2007 Refund or you received a refund anticipation loan, you will be receiving a check instead of a direct deposit.

Regards,
Internal Revenue Service

"Moving at the speed of life, we are bound to collide with each other."

Come watch the movie Crash as we kick off "Rethinking Race Week: Black, White & Beyond" with The Office of Multicultural Development. Crash is about the "complexities of racial tolerance" in America.

Synopsis: A seemingly simple car accident in Los Angeles brings together a very diverse group of people. As their lives collide the issue of racism and racial profiling is explored as each of these people work through their own fears and inherent prejudices. This film is an example of the interconnectedness of life in the melting pot.

Showing will be on Friday, January 30th at 5:30pm in the Student Union Theater. Refreshments will be served.

Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson will make a special appearance at the University of Akron women's basketball game versus Toledo on Saturday, Jan. 31.

Johnson, who became a global gymnastics icon at the 2008 Bejing Olympic games, will participate in a question and answer session at halftime and sign autographs following the Mid-American Conference contest.

The Zips and Rockets will tip off at 2:30 p.m. after the men's game versus Central Michigan. Tickets for the exciting event are on sale now and can be purchased at the the Akron athletics ticket office for $6 (adults) and $4 (youth). Students get in free with the showing of their Zip Card! For more ticket information, call 1-888-99-AKRON.

Johnson, who is one of the most decorated U.S. gymnasts in Olympic history, won a gold medal in the balance beam and silver medals in the floor individual, all around and team competitions.

The 17-year-old star from Des Moines, Iowa, is known for performing some some of the most difficult skills performed in gymnastics, including a 2.5 twisting Yurchenko, a standing full (back flip with a full twist) on beam, a tucked double-double (two flips with two twist) on floor and a double-twisting double layout off of bars.

Johnson is also unique among elite gymnasts as she only trains 20-25 hours a week and attends public high school whereas most elites train 40 hours a week and have private tutors. She was born on January 19, 1992 and is the daughter of Doug and Teri Johnson.

How is your dining etiquette? Do you think you have what it takes to make a good first impression on a prospective employee? There is no better, or possibly worse, place to make an impression than the dinner table. Most of us can get through a meal with a friend without even thinking twice about it, but once you’re sitting with a potential employer, the pressure is on.

The Center for Career Management is offering a “crash course” highlighting the basic elements of a full-course meal. Our program this year is being sponsored by the Suarez Corporation and dining tips will be facilitated by a consultant specializing in etiquette and interviewing, as you enjoy a lunch of soup, salad, your choice of entrée, and dessert. Reservations for this event must be made by Monday, February 2, 2009 by 5:00pm through the Center for Career Management, Simmons 301. Seating is limited.

For more information and reservation details contact the Center for Career Management at 330-972-7747 or uaccm@uakron.edu. A $20 deposit (cash or Zip Card meal plan) is required when you register and will be refunded after you attend the event. Those who reserve a meal, but do not attend, will forfeit their $20.
Note: seating is open to new attendees

This year almost 60 students, faculty, and staff will head to New Orleans to partner with Rebuilding Together as they work towards their goal of building 1,000 homes in the Gulf Coast. Rebuilding Together is the nation’s leading nonprofit working to preserve affordable home ownership and revitalize communities. The work the volunteers do will vary but the team will be working mostly on 2 homes. We look forward to the impact that we will have and to the impact that will be made on all of us.

In order to assist our students in funding a trip of this magnitude The University of Akron will host the 4th Annual Hearts for Humanity. Hearts for Humanity is a dinner, dance, and auction fundraiser that not only raises funds but is fun! The food is delicious, Zippy even pays a visit and will dance with you or with someone else, and the auction items are fantastic. The cost for students is $20/person, which can be paid online or with your Zip Card at Rob's. All other tickets are $25/person. Don't miss this great evening of fun and an opportunity to support our volunteers and the people of New Orleans.
