Update Windows to Mitigate Worms, Performance Problems
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
spacer image
A new computer worm is expected to be launched within the next couple of weeks against machines running Windows. To combat this potential threat, Microsoft has released a patch that should mitigate the problem.

To load the patch to your personal computer, simply click on the Microsoft icon (a globe with the Microsoft flag) on the lower right-hand side of your screen and follow the directions. The update process is automatic.

NOTE: If you install updates and then you are prompted to restart your computer, you MUST restart your computer before the update takes effect.

From time to time, Microsoft releases patches and updates that fix performance problems and “holes” in the software. A message indicating that updates are available will often “pop up” as you start your computer. As critical updates become available, Information Technology Services automatically pushes those updates to machines on the UANET domain. ITS advices that you always install these updates when they are available. If your computer is not part of the UANET domain, you may not have received the pop up. If so, you need to go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to get the patch.

NOTE: The icon will only appear when there are updates and patches available. If there is no icon, there are no updates available at that time.

If you are not installing the updates manually or you are not receiving the globe icon, then your machine is probably not being updated regularly. If so, contact the Help Desk.

For more information, contact the Help Desk at (330) 972-6888.
