Freshmen and Seniors –

We need your input. The 2009 National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) has launched. If you were selected to participate in the survey you should have received an e-mail requesting your participation in an online survey about your academic and social experiences here at UA. The subject line of the e-mail reads “UA Wants Your Feedback.”

A number of prizes, awarded in the form of credit to your ZipCard, will be awarded randomly – but only to those that complete the survey. The next reminder e-mails to students will be sent the week after Spring Break. Be on the lookout for it!

Please help us to improve our services to students by completing the survey. If you’d like more information about NSSE please contact Sabrina Andrews, Director of Institutional Research at (330) 972-7888 or visit the NSSE website at: http://nsse.iub.edu/

The Problem of Vagueness March 10
5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

spacer image
"My strangest belief is that vague words have hidden boundaries. I think that the subtraction of a single grain of sand might turn a heap into a non-heap. I think I was, briefly the youngest man on Earth (having just previously been the oldest boy on earth).
Oddly, these unusual beliefs do not issue from scientific zeal or deep-sea metaphysics. They are imposed by boring beliefs, in particular allegiance to lightweight common sense and textbook logic... Given this modest degree of intellectual conservatism, the ancient stories paradox corners me into the belief that all vague terms are sensitive to arbitrarily small differences."
- Roy Sorensen

What is the philosophical Problem of Vagueness? What arguments in particular push someone to accept epistemicism? What ground does someone gain by accepting beliefs like the ones stated above? What do they loose? These are the questions we will be investigating in our next Philosophy Club Meeting on Tuesday, March 10th at 5:00 PM in the Student Union room 316. Come join us to discuss "The Problem of Vagueness."
